Saying

Translation of the saying:

Abu Zakariyya Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Talaqani informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani say: “the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, never used opium, or wore amulets, or composed poetry by himself.”

Translation of the saying:

Hasan ibn Qasim al-Tehrani informed us, he said: I asked Mansoor about opium. So he said: “Indeed, it is like intoxicants and gambling, in both of which there is great sin and some benefits for people, and their sin is greater than their benefit. So avoid it that you may succeed.” I said: “There are some from among jurists who use it!” He said: “What do you want from jurists?! Are jurists but some men from among people?!”

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Habib al-Tabari informed us, he said: I asked Mansoor about hashish. So he said: “It is one of its brothers -that is, alcohol!” Then he said: “Whoever holds a cigarette has indeed held a burning ember from the fire (of Hell)!” I said: “May Allah make ugly the Imam of a people who is fascinated by pipes!” So he pondered a moment and then said: “Forget about this (matter).”

Translation of the saying:

Abu Ibrahim al-Samarqandi informed us, he said: I heard the best person I have ever seen say: “Smoking is the pleasure of the companions of the fire,” and I heard him forbid performing prayer behind someone who smokes cigarettes.

Translation of the saying:

Abd al-Hamid ibn Bakhtiyar informed us, he said: I was with Mansoor at the gate of a mosque. Then he saw a man (holding a cigarette and) smoking. So he said to him: “Do you like smoke?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then wait for the Day when the sky brings manifest smoke, enveloping people; that is a painful punishment”. Then the man threw away his cigarette upon hearing this and said: “I ask Allah for forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance.”

Translation of the saying:

Abu Ibrahim al-Samarqandi informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor say: “The money of a dog that is played with is unlawful, and the money of smoke is unlawful.”

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Habib and Walid ibn Mahmoud both informed us, they said: Two men referred to him for judgment while quarreling with each other. One of them said: “This man gave me hashish, and I used it. He then came to me demanding its price, and he raised it!” The other man said: “I did not give it to him as a gift; rather, I sold it!” So he became angry and said: “Indeed, one of you gives his brother poison to kill him, and then he comes to him demanding its price?! There is no price for him, nor any honor.”
