Question & Answer

What does Allamah Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani say about using, buying, and selling cigarettes, hookahs, and opium?

Please pay attention to the following points:

1. There should be no doubt that the use of drugs is forbidden; because, on the one hand, it causes serious and fatal harm to the body, while Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ[1]; “And do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own hands,” and said: ﴿غَيْرَ مُضَارٍّ[2]; “Without causing harm,” and it is well-known that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: «لَا ضَرَرَ وَلَا ضِرَارَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ»; “There should be neither harming nor reciprocation harm in Islam.” On the other hand, it is considered an example of wasting wealth, while Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا ۝ إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ ۖ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِرَبِّهِ كَفُورًا[3]; “And do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of satans, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.” Also, it is proven that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) prohibited the waste of wealth, and one of our companions informed us, he said:

[4]; “I heard His Eminence Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) never used opium, or wore amulets, or composed poetry by himself.”

Rather, drugs can be classified under the category or ruling of wine; because many of them intoxicate the intellect, meaning that they prevent it from functioning normally and naturally. This is the meaning of intoxication, and it has been narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) that he said: «كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ، وَمَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ»[5]; “Every intoxicant is wine, and whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a small amount of it is (also) forbidden.” Also, one of our companions informed us, he said:

!»[6]; “I asked His Eminence Mansoor about opium, so he said: Indeed it is like alcohol and gambling which in both there is big sin and some benefits for the people, and the sin of the two is bigger than the benefit of the two, therefore avoid it, so that you may succeed, I said: There are some jurists who use it! He said: What do you want from the jurists?! Are the jurists except a number of the people?!”

2. There is no room for doubt or discussion about the prohibition of smoking like the prohibition of the use of drugs; because it also leads to fatal diseases and is considered an example of wasting wealth; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

[7]; “I asked His Eminence Mansoor about hashish, so he said: This is one of its – i.e. alcohol- brothers! Then he said: Whoever holds a cigarette in his hand, he is indeed holding a flame from the fire (of hell)! I said: May Allah make the Imam of a people who loves pipes ugly! His Eminence pondered a little and then said: Leave this (subject).”

Also, one of our companions informed us, he said:

[8]; “I heard from the best person I have seen that he says: Smoking is the pleasure of the people of Hell, and I heard him forbidding praying behind someone who smokes.”

Also, one of our companions informed us, he said:

[10]; “Mansoor saw a man smoking (a cigarette in his hand), so he said to him: Do you like smoke? He said: Yes, he said: ‘Then wait for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke; covering the people, it is a painful torment!’ so when the man heard this, he threw his cigarette and said: I ask Allah for forgiveness and I repent to Him.”

From what has been stated, it is understood that selling or buying drugs and substances used for smoking is not permissible; because the rule in Islam is the prohibition of selling or buying anything that is not permissible to use; considering that Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ[11]; “And do not help one another in sin and transgression, and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is severe in punishment”; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

[12]; “I heard His Eminence Mansoor say: the money coming from a dog that is played with is Haram and the money coming from smoking is Haram.”

Also, one of our companions informed us, he said:

[13]; “Two men, while arguing with each other, brought the judgment to His Eminence, so one of them said: This man gave me hashish and I used it, then he came to me and demanded its price from me and raised its price! The other man said: I did not donate it to him, but I sold it! So His Eminence got angry and said: Indeed one of you gives poison to his brother to kill him and then comes to him and demands its price?! There is no price for him and it has no value.”

Based on this, one who sells drugs and smoking accessories does not deserve their price. If he takes it, he has taken what is not lawful for him and devoured people’s wealth falsely, while Allah Almighty said: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ[14]; “O you who believed! Do not devour one another’s wealth among yourselves falsely.” Paying him their price by one who buys them is not permissible either; because Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَلَا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَهَاءَ أَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّتِي جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ قِيَامًا[15]; “And do not give the foolish your wealth that Allah has made a means of support for you.” Rather, it is not unlikely that the major sellers and buyers of these substances are corrupters on the earth and deserve the punishment prescribed for those who wage war against Allah and His Prophet; because the destructive consequences of spreading these toxic substances among Muslims are not hidden, to the extent that spread them among Muslims can be considered as direct participation in murder or the cause of it, ﴿وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ[16]; “And Allah has full knowledge of everything.”

What is the opinion of His Eminence Allamah on the use of naswar, which is a type of drug?

Answer to
Sub-Question 1
Date: 2016 October 1

Naswar is a narcotic and addictive herbal substance derived from tobacco that is mixed with lime and placed in the mouth. The use of this substance, which is common in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Iran, and India, is forbidden like the use of other narcotic and addictive substances; because it causes significant harm to the body and brings it no rational benefit. Therefore, it is wronging oneself and wasting wealth, both of which are impermissible; as Allah Almighty has said in an absolute manner: ﴿وَمَا اللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلْمًا لِلْعِبَادِ[1]; “And Allah does not want any wrong for the servants,” and said: ﴿وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا[2]; “And do not spend wastefully,” and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: «لَا ضَرَرَ وَلَا ضِرَارَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ»; “There should be neither harming nor reciprocation harm in Islam.” Therefore, His Eminence Allamah Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani (may Allah protect him) has warned against the use of this harmful and non-beneficial substance; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

وَقَالَ: مَنْ يَمُصُّ نَصْوَارَ فَإِنَّمَا يَمُصُّ جَذْوَةً مِنَ النَّارِ»; “I asked Mansoor about naswar. So he said: ‘Is it anything but one of these impure things?!’ And I heard him say: ‘Do not rinse your mouths with wine!’ I said: ‘Glory be to Allah! Who would rinse his mouth with wine?!’ He said: ‘One who puts naswar in his mouth, it is as if he is rinsing his mouth with wine!’ And he said: ‘Whoever sucks naswar is only sucking a burning ember from the fire (of Hell).’”

In addition to that, the use of this narcotic and addictive substance increases saliva production significantly, which requires frequent spitting in different places, to the extent that in some countries, such as Afghanistan, a special container called “spittoon” has been made so that those who use naswar spit into it, while this contradicts the cleanliness that is obligatory in Islam and may lead to the spread of some diseases; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

! قَالَ: ادْرَءُوا عَنِّي، فَلَسْتُ مِنْ أَقْذَارِكُمْ»; “Mansoor said: ‘Indeed, Allah does not love any unclean frequent spitter,’ and he entered a house and was brought a spittoon. So he said: ‘What is this?!’ They said: ‘It is a spittoon!’ He said: ‘Keep it away from me, for I am not one of your unclean ones.’”

Also, one of our companions informed us, he said:

قَالَ: إِنَّهُ خَطِيئَةٌ، وَكَفَّارَتُهُ دَفْنُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا يُضْطَرُّ إِلَى ذَلِكَ يَأْخُذُ خِرْقَةً فَيَبْصُقُ فِيهَا، ثُمَّ يَرُدُّ بَعْضَهَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ، ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُهَا عِنْدَ الْفَرَاغِ»; “A man spat on the ground in the presence of Mansoor, so he flinched away from him. I said: ‘Why did you flinch away from him?!’ He said: ‘I did not flinch away from him, but rather Allah flinched away from him!’ I said: ‘Sometimes it is necessary.’ He said, ‘It is a wrongdoing, and its atonement is to bury it.’ Then he said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) whenever forced to do so, would take a piece of cloth, spit into it, fold it back on itself, and then wash it when he was free.’”

May Allah grant all Muslims success in observing piety and cleanliness and avoiding harmful and impure things so that they prepare their bodies and souls for entering the kingdom of Allah and achieving the ultimate goal of Islam in the world.
