Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani
(51) Although now most people, like animals, are only thinking about the worldly life and have no worries other than eating, sleeping and mating, but there is no need for the will and action of all of them to form and maintain the sovereignty of Mahdi, but the will and action of a number of them is enough; just as the other governments in the world that the will and action of all the people did not exist to form and maintain them, but there was the proper will and action of a number of them, and that was enough for them. Saying

Translation of the saying:

Momin ibn Mahmoud and Abdullah ibn Habib both informed us, they said: We were with Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani in his house, then we mentioned sects, so he said: Do not let the sects take you (away like flood)! Indeed, God selected a religion for you and perfected it for you and set a specific border for it like the borders of my house; so whatever is in the alley, it belongs to the alley and whatever is in the house, it belongs to the house!

Explanation of the saying:

The meaning of his Honor from this luminous saying is that the borders of Islam are clear by mutawatir speeches from God and His Prophet, and they will never increase or decrease and with this description, whatever is in it, it is from Islam although it is not in your sect, and whatever is not in it, it is not from Islam although it is in your sect.

Translation of the saying:

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hirawi informed us, he said: I asked Mansoor about the Sunni and the Shia that which one is the truth, so he said: Are you someone who causes sedition O Muhammad?! I said: No may I be your sacrifice, but I am tired of the conflict between the two; because each of the two thinks that all of the truth is in it and the other has no share in that! He said: Leave them be; because they overdo and underdo! I said: Do you allow me to write it down, may I be your sacrifice? He said: Write: But the Sunni left the Ahl al-Bayt of their Prophet and followed the desires of a group who were misguided before and misguided many and obeyed the command of any rebellious oppressor! But the Shia, so they recognized something from the truth, but they added to it and reduced it, until they were left nothing from it. But we are the middle support, those who have been left behind will reach us and those who have gone further will return to us!

Explanation of the saying:

The meaning of his Honor from the following of this luminous saying is that he is a man of moderation and temperance and is not involved in the Sunni underdoing and the Shia overdoing and therefore, the intellectual and fair Sunnis will reach out to him and the intellectual and fair Shias will return to him, so that all of them unite together before him and get ready for the advent of the Paradise of God.

Translation of the saying:

Jubayr ibn ‘Ata al-Khujandi informed us, he said: A man came to Mansoor and said to him: Are you Shia or Sunni?! He said: I am a true Muslim and whoever is not satisfied with me for these words, May God take him away! Then he recited (this verse): “Ibrahim was not Jewish or Christian, rather he was a true Muslim and was not a polytheist”.

Translation of the saying:

Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Shirazi informed us, he said: A man told me: This friend of yours invites toward God and does a good deed, except that there is something wrong with him! I said: What is wrong with him?! He said: That he says: I am neither Shia nor Sunni, Rather I am from Muslims! Then I informed Mansoor of it, so he said: Tell him: God Almighty says: “And who says better than the one who invites toward God and does a good deed and says that I am from Muslims”, then I informed the man of this, so he said: It seems I have not heard this verse from the book of God! Then he returned while saying: “God knows better where to place His Message!”.

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Balkhi informed us, he said: A man from Shias wanted permission from Mansoor (to visit), so he gave him permission. Then when he came to him, said: Your book was given to us and we took a look at it, so we thought you are Shia! Then we took a look at it, so we thought you are Sunni! Then which one are you? May God arrange your work! Are you Shia or Sunni?! His Honor said: Woe to you O man! Leave me alone to reform among people! That man said: No I swear to God, we do not follow you unless you are Shia! At that time, Mansoor who was leaning, sat upright and said: Fool! Do you think I beg you to follow me?! No I swear to God, whoever follows me, it is not other than that he has followed me to his own benefit, and whoever disobeys me, then (has disobeyed me) to his own loss, “And I am not your guardian (meaning responsible for your work)”! Then he said: Do you not claim to follow Ali ibn Abi Talib? He said: Yes, he said: Then inform me if he was Shia or Sunni?! Then the man lowered his head and pondered for a while, so he murmured: How could he be Shia while there were Shias for him?! And how could he be Sunni?! Then he raised his head and said: He was not Shia or Sunni, rather he was upon the religion of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household! His Honor said: You are right! I too am upon that which Ali ibn Abi Talib was upon!

Translation of the saying:

Ali ibn Dawud al-Faydh Abadi informed us, he said: In Mansoor’s presence I recited the word of God Almighty that says: “And the Jews said the Christians are on nothing and the Christians said the Jews are on nothing, while both were reciting (the Book)! In this way those who do not know said the same!”. He said: Do you know who are those who do not know and said the same as the words of Jews and Christians? I said: God and His Wali know better! He said: They are Sunnis and Shias! The Sunnis said the Shias are on nothing and the Shias said the Sunnis are on nothing, while both recite the Book (of God)! I said: I hope their disagreement ends after Mahdi comes to them! He said: No, but God “on the Day of Resurrection will judge between them on that which they disagreed on”!

Translation of the saying:

Walid ibn Mahmoud al-Sajistani informed us, he said: In Mansoor’s presence the Shias were mentioned, then a man said: May God curse them; because all of them are infidels! So Mansoor Got angry at him and said: “Woe to you! Then woe to you! (Or you deserve it more! Then you deserve it more!)” Do you not know that whoever considers a Muslim as an infidel, it returns toward himself?! The man said: They are not Muslims may I be your sacrifice! Then Mansoor stood up angrily and said: If the inside of human becomes full of pus, it is better to be filled with prejudice! O God! Humiliate the fanatics! Then he left, so the man reached him from behind and said: May I be your sacrifice, they insult the companions of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household! So Mansoor said: You forgive and be patient! Do you not know the companions of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household, insulted each other as well? They defame us and call us bastards! So Masnoor said: Are those other than ignorant ones who address you?! So salute them as God has commanded you! The man said: Has God not commanded them to anything as He has commanded us?! Mansoor said: Yes, He has commanded them to refrain from (defaming) you, then they have disobeyed Him! So do you want to disobey Him too as they did so to become similar to each other?! “So forgive and be patient until God brings His Affair”! The man said: What is His Affair? He said: His Caliph, then when His Caliph comes, he will clarify for you and them some of which you disagree on.

Translation of the saying:

Zakir ibn Ma’roof informed us, he said: Mansoor heard a man charging a Shia with infidelity, so he said to him: Woe to you, Is he but a man who considers Ali to be better than Abu Bakr, as you consider Abu Bakr to be better than Ali?! I swear to God, if a man considers Shafi’i to be better than Abu Bakr, he does not become infidel with this work, let alone he considers Ali to be better than him?! An infidel is someone who considers an infidel to be better than a believer, then he recited this verse: “Did you not see those who were given a portion of the Book, turn toward idols and Taught and say to infidels that they are more guided than the believers?!” The man said: You are right may I be your sacrifice, but they insult Abu Bakr! He said: This (work) is a sin and they do not charge anyone with infidelity because of a sin except for Kharijites! Then he said: A man insulted Abu Bakr, so Abu Buraydah told Abu Bakr: Should I behead him O caliph of God’s Messenger?! Then Abu Bakr said: May your mother mourn for your death O Abu Buraydah! It is not for anyone after the Messenger of God peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household!

Explanation of the saying:

The saying of his Honor about tolerating considering Ali to be better than Abu Bakr, is a moderate, reasonable and away from imitation and sectarian prejudice saying which has been known among righteous predecessors of Sunnis; as Abd al-Razzaq (Died in 211 AH) has quoted: «قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ مَرَّةً وَأَنَا مُسْتَقْبِلُهُ، وَتَبَسَّمَ وَلَيْسَ مَعَنَا أَحَدٌ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: مَا شَأْنُكَ؟ [11]; “One day Ma’mar (Died in 153 AH), while I was sitting in front of him and no one was with us, laughed. I told him: What is wrong with you? He said: I am amazed by people of Kufa! It seems Kufa is built based on loving Ali! I talked to no one in it unless the moderate of them was someone who considered Ali to be better than Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, Sufyan al-Thuri (one of the Sunni elders) is among them! Abd al-Razzaq says: I told Ma’mar: Did you see him yourself?! As if I found it burdensome, so Ma’mar said: Why?! If someone says that to him Ali is better than the two, I do not blame him whenever he speaks of virtue of the two as well and says that to him (it is so); also if someone says that to him ‘Umar is better than Ali and Abu Bakr, I do not blame him”. This is the very nice approach that Muslims need, so that the alliance which holds Muslims’ good and advantage, becomes feasible for them; as Muhammad ibn Sirin (Died in 110 AH) said: «يَكُونُ فِي هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَلِيفَةٌ لَا يَفْضُلُ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَا عُمَرُ»[12]; “There will be a Caliph in this world that Abu Bakr and ‘Umar are not better than him” and no one considers him an infidel because of this words or said that he is Shia!

Translation of the saying:

Abd al-Salam ibn Abd al-Qayyum informed us, he said: I was with Mansoor in a mosque, then a man told him: I am Shia! He said: what do you mean by Shia? He said: Follower of the family of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household! He said: Be a Muslim to be the follower of the family of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household! Then (another) man told him: I am Sunni! He said: what do you mean by Sunni? He said: Follower of the Sunnah of God’s Messenger peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household! He said: Be a Muslim to be the follower of the Sunnah of God’s Messenger peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household! Then he said: You took the names and abandoned the meanings! Be Muslims, O stones, as you were with God’s Messenger peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household, and do not be from those who “split their religion and divided into groups, every group is happy with that which they have”!

Explanation of the saying:

The meaning of his Honor from this saying that said: “Be a Muslim to be the follower of the family of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household” is that whoever is truly a Muslim, is the follower of the family of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household; because there is no Muslim who dislikes the family of Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household, or does not like to follow them unless he is a hypocrite; as it has been said from God’s Messenger peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household that told Ali: «لَا يُحِبُّكَ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلَا يُبْغِضُكَ إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ»[14]; “No one but a believer likes you and no one but a hypocrite dislikes you”, and the meaning of his Honor from this saying that said: “Be a Muslim to be the follower of the Sunnah of God’s Messenger peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household” is that whoever is truly a Muslim, is the follower of the Sunnah of God’s Messenger peace and blessings of God be upon him and his household; because there is no Muslim who refuses to follow the Sunnah of his Excellency unless he is a hypocrite, and with this description, there is no Muslim unless he is Shia and Sunni, although it has different degrees.

Translation of the saying:

Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Taliqani informed us, he said: I brought two of our helpers to Mansoor, then I told him: He is the fellow from your helpers and is Shia, and he is the fellow from your helpers and is Sunni, he said: Leave us with your Shia and Sunni O Ahmad! Indeed God has chosen Islam as your religion, so believe in it that is “the religion of your father, Ibrahim, He has named you Muslims”, so do not call yourselves other than “Muslim”, “and do not mention each other with titles”! Then he said: Whoever comes to God while he has not associated anything with Him, he will enter the Paradise!
