Saying

Translation of the saying:

A number of our companions informed us, they said: Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani stayed in a village to invite its people toward Allah and His Caliph on Earth; so its people welcomed him, and he was their guest for three days. Then, when he wanted to leave, they rushed to him, surrounded him, and said: “O friend of Allah! Give us some advice before you leave; because we heard nothing from you but wisdom, and your words move rocks!” So His Eminence stood on the edge of a pond so that everyone could see him, then he said:

O people! Know that there is no capital more beneficial to you than knowledge, and people are one of the three: one who knows, one who learns, and one who is no one. O people! Do not drown in your livelihood, and do not be heedless of what is happening in your world and your Hereafter. Heedlessness at this time is a great sin. Find comfort in the Quran and act on it. Know the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah and his family and follow it. Use your intellects and examine the words of these people -and he pointed at the scholars and elders of the village-; if you find them in line with your intellects and in line with the Quran and the Sunnah, then accept them, otherwise throw it against the wall, and whatever sin it may have is on my neck. Do not consider anyone worthy of obedience except for Allah and His Caliphs on Earth; because the Jews went astray by obeying their scholars and elders; as it has been said in the Quran: ﴿اتَّخَذُوا أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ[1]. Imitation withers the root of the intellect and leaves no room for thinking. Do not be fanatical about your old beliefs and wrong opinions, for it is one of the gates of Hell. The best of you are those with the most understanding, not with the most prayers and fasts. Faith and righteous deeds are intertwined, like these two fingers, -and he joined between the index finger and the middle finger- and neither of them will benefit you without the other. Faith is that you have correct belief, and one who does not have correct belief will never succeed, even if he is one of the most devout worshipers. So put your belief in the balance of the intellect and present it to the Quran and the Sunnah, lest you go astray. Do not be tempted by the world, and do not sell your Hereafter for it; because whoever sells his Hereafter for the world has surely incurred loss in his transaction and has become bankrupt. Do not follow your passions, for there is no end to passions, but rather listen to the call of conscience, for it will not lead to regret. My last word with you is, know the Imam of your time; because whoever does not know the Imam of his time has not known his religion, and there is no good in the likes of him[2]. I was your guest for a few days, and now I am leaving you. You were good hosts for me, may Allah reward you well; was I a good guest for you?

So people answered him from all sides: “You have been the best guest who has ever stayed with us until now.” Then he said:

If so, then do not forget me and my words, remind each other of them, and convey them to those who do not know me and my words. Perhaps Allah will benefit them. Allah will ask you about me, “Did you listen to the words of My servant whom I brought to you?!” I leave you all to Allah the Merciful, and I hope that His decree brings me back to you or brings you back to me. Peace and Allah’s mercy be upon you.

Then he came down from the edge of the pond and went to the scholars and elders of the village who were standing in a corner and listening to his words with anger, and he appeased them; because he knew that they held a grudge against him. Then he and his companions left the village to travel through the Earth and invite people toward Allah and His Caliph.

↑[1] . At-Tawbah/ 31
↑[2] . His intended meaning of “the Imam of the time” is the one whom Allah has appointed as an Imam for people of this time, who is the Mahdi, peace be upon him.
