1 . أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدصَادِقَ الْإِصْفَهَانِيُّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِلْمَنْصُورِ الْهَاشِمِيِّ الْخُرَاسَانِيِّ: إِنَّ لَنَا جَارًا مِنَ الْبَابِيَّةِ وَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ عَلِي‌مُحَمَّدَ الْبَابَ كَانَ هُوَ الْمَهْدِيَّ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ كِتَابًا يُسَمُّونَهُ «الْبَيَانَ»، فِيهِ كُلُّ بَلَاءٍ! فَقَالَ: لَا تُجَالِسُوهُمْ وَلَا تُنَاكِحُوهُمْ وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا مِنْ ذَبَائِحِهِمْ، فَإِنَّهُمْ لَيْسُوا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَلَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ، ثُمَّ هَجَمَ عَلَيْهِ الْغَمُّ فَقَالَ: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ دَعَا إِلَى ضَلَالَةٍ إِلَّا وَجَدَ مَنْ يُتَابِعُهُ!

Translation of the saying:

Hasan ibn Muhammad Sadiq al-Isfahani informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani: “We have a neighbor from the Babiyyah, and they believe that Ali Muhammad al-Bab was the Mahdi, so Allah sent down a book to him, which they call “al-Bayan,” in which there is every calamity!” So he said: “Do not sit with them, do not marry them, and do not eat their sacrifices; because they are not from Muslims or from the people of the Book!” Then sadness overwhelmed him, and he said: “No servant invited toward misguidance unless he found someone who would follow him!”

2 . أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُلْتَانِيُّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِلْمَنْصُورِ: عِنْدَنَا جَمَاعَةٌ يُقَالُ لَهُمُ الْقَادِيَانِيَّةُ، يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ الْمَهْدِيَّ كَانَ أَحْمَدَ الْقَادِيَانِيَّ، فَيَقُولُونَ لَهُ أَحْمَدَ الْمَوْعُودَ! قَالَ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ! مَا لَقِينَا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَحَامِدَةِ! إِنَّ الْمَهْدِيَّ إِذَا جَاءَ يَمْلَأُ الْأَرْضَ قِسْطًا وَعَدْلًا بَعْدَ مَا مُلِئَتْ ظُلْمًا وَجَوْرًا، فَهَلْ فَعَلَ هَذَا هَذَا؟! قُلْتُ: إِنَّهُمْ يَذْكُرُونَ لَهُ رِوَايَاتٍ مِنْهَا مَا يَنْطَبِقُ عَلَيْهِ! قَالَ: دَعْنَا مِنْ رِوَايَاتِكُمْ يَا جَعْفَرُ! إِنَّ رِوَايَاتِكُمْ هَذِهِ لَا تَعْدِلُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ جَنَاحَ بَعُوضَةٍ!

Translation of the saying:

Ja‘far ibn Ibrahim al-Multani informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “There is a group with us called Qadianiyyah. They claim that the Mahdi was Ahmad al-Qadiani, so they call him the promised Ahmad!” He said: “Glory be to Allah! We saw things from these Ahmads! Indeed, the Mahdi, when he comes, fills the Earth with justice and equity after it has been filled with oppression and cutely. So did this (man) do this (work)?!” I said: “They mention some narrations for him, some of which apply to him!” He said: “Forget about your narrations, O Ja‘far! Indeed, these narrations of yours are not worth a mosquito’s wing in the sight of Allah!”

3 . أَخْبَرَنَا ذَاكِرُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِلْمَنْصُورِ: إِنَّ رَجُلًا يُقَالُ لَهُ مُحَمَّد نَاصِرُ الْيَمَانِيُّ يُنَادِي فِي النَّاسِ بِأَنَّهُ الْمَهْدِيُّ، قَالَ: كَذَبَ عَدُوُّ اللَّهِ، إِنَّهُ أَضَلُّ مِنْ حِمَارِ أَهْلِهِ! ثُمَّ قَالَ: كُلُّ مَنْ نَادَى فِي النَّاسِ بِأَنَّهُ الْمَهْدِيُّ قَبْلَ وُقُوعِ الصَّيْحَةِ وَالْخَسْفِ فَهُوَ كَذَّابٌ مُفْتَرٍ، قُلْتُ: وَمَا الصَّيْحَةُ وَالْخَسْفُ؟ قَالَ: صَيْحَةٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ بِاسْمِهِ وَخَسْفٌ بِجَيْشٍ مِنْ أَعْدَائِهِ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ، وَبِهِمَا يُعْرَفُ الْمَهْدِيُّ.

Translation of the saying:

Zakir ibn Ma‘roof informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “A man called Muhammad Nasser al-Yamani proclaims among people that he is the Mahdi.” He said: “He is lying, the enemy of Allah. He is more astray than the donkey of his house!” Then he said: “Whoever proclaims among people that he is the Mahdi before the occurrence of the Sayhah and the Khasf is a fabricator liar.” I said: “What are the Sayhah and the Khasf?” He said: “A call from the heaven in his name and the sinking of an army of his enemies between Mecca and Medina, and the Mahdi is known by those two.”

4 . أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الشِّيرَازِيُّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِلْمَنْصُورِ: إِنَّ غُلَامًا خَرَجَ يَدْعُو إِلَى نَفْسِهِ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَحْمَدُ الْحَسَنُ، يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ الْيَمَانِيُّ الَّذِي جَاءَتْ فِيهِ رِوَايَةٌ، فَيَقُولُ لِنَفْسِهِ الْمَهْدِيَّ، وَيَقُولُ الْمُنْجِي، وَيَقُولُ الْوَصِيَّ، وَيَقُولُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ! قَالَ: أَلَيْسَ هَذَا الَّذِي قَدْ خَرَجَ بِالْعِرَاقِ؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى، قَالَ: هُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ!

Translation of the saying:

Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Shirazi informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “A young man has emerged inviting (people) toward himself. He is called Ahmad al-Hasan and claims he is the Yamani about whom a narration has been reported. So he calls himself the Mahdi, the savior, the successor, and everything!” He said: “Is he not the one who has emerged in Iraq?! I said: “Yes.” He said: “He is of lesser significance to Allah than all of this!”

5 . أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ الطِّهْرَانِيُّ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الْمَنْصُورِ، فَسَأَلَنِي عَنْ أَصْحَابِي بِطِهْرَانَ، فَقُلْتُ: كَانَ لِي أَصْحَابٌ مِنَ الْأَحْمَدِيَّةِ، قَالَ: وَمَا الْأَحْمَدِيَّةُ؟! قُلْتُ: أَتْبَاعُ أَحْمَدَ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ! قَالَ: وَمَا كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ؟ قُلْتُ: كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ وَزِيرُ الْمَهْدِيِّ! قَالَ: كَذَبُوا أَعْدَاءُ اللَّهِ! أَمَا قُلْتَ لَهُمْ إِنَّ وُزَرَاءَ الْمَهْدِيِّ كُلَّهُمْ مِنَ الْأَعَاجِمِ، مَا فِيهِمْ عَرَبِيٌّ؟ قُلْتُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، وَمَا عِلْمِي بِذَلِكَ؟! قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَمَا كَانَ حُجَّتُهُمْ عَلَى قَوْلِهِمْ؟ قُلْتُ: رِوَايَةٌ يَذْكُرُونَهَا، يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ فِيهَا اسْمَ الرَّجُلِ! قَالَ: رِوَايَةٌ رِوَايَةٌ رِوَايَةٌ، وَهَلْ أَهْلَكَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ إِلَّا رِوَايَةٌ؟! قُلْتُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، إِنَّهَا خَيْرُ حُجَّتِهِمْ وَغَيْرُهَا أَدْحَضُ مِنْهَا! إِنَّهُمْ يَحْتَجُّونَ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِدُخَانٍ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ فِيهِ اسْمَهُ، وَبِأَحْلَامٍ يَدَّعُونَهَا! قَالَ: هَذِهِ حُجَّةُ قَوْمٍ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: ﴿أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَامُهُمْ بِهَذَا ۚ أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ[1].

Translation of the saying:

Hasan ibn Qasim al-Tehrani informed us, he said: I went to Mansoor. Then he asked me about my friends in Tehran. So I said: “I had some friends from the Ahmadiyyah.” He said: “What is the Ahmadiyyah?!” I said: “The followers of Ahmad al-Hasan al-Basri!” He said: “What did they say?!” I said: “They said that he is the minister of the Mahdi!” He said: “They lied, the enemies of Allah! Did you not tell them that all the ministers of the Mahdi are non-Arabs and there is no Arab speaker among them?!” I said: “May I be sacrificed for you, how would I know that?!” He said: “Yes. What was their proof for their statement?!” I said: “They mention a narration and claim that this man’s name is in it!” He said: “A narration, a narration, a narration! Did anything but a narration destroy this Ummah?!” I said: “May I be sacrificed for you, it is their best proof, and their other proofs are even weaker than that! They use a cloud of smoke to establish proof against people, thinking that his name is in it, and dreams that they claim!” He said: “These are the proofs of a people who do not use the intellect!” Then he recited this verse: “Do their dreams command them to (do) this, or are they a transgressing people?!”

6 . أَخْبَرَنَا وَلِيدُ بْنُ مَحْمُودٍ السِّجِسْتَانِيُّ، قَالَ: كُنَّا عِنْدَ الْمَنْصُورِ نَتَذَاكَرُ فِيمَنِ ادَّعَى هَذَا الْأَمْرَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ، فَجَرَى ذِكْرُ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ -يَعْنِي أَحْمَدَ الْحَسَنَ، فَقُلْتُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، إِنِّي كَلَّمْتُ أَتْبَاعَهُ، فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ مِنْ أَحْمَقِ النَّاسِ! إِنَّهُمْ يَحْتَجُّونَ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِمَنَامَاتٍ، وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ فِيهَا يَقُولُونَ: قَدْ جَاءَتْ رِوَايَةٌ بِأَنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَتَمَثَّلُ فِي صُورَةِ النَّبِيِّ وَآلِهِ! قَالَ: أَهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَ صُورَةَ النَّبِيِّ وَآلِهِ؟! قُلْتُ: لَا، قَالَ: فَلَا حُجَّةَ لَهُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الرِّوَايَةِ، إِنَّمَا الْحُجَّةُ فِيهَا لِمَنْ يَعْرِفُ صُورَةَ النَّبِيِّ وَآلِهِ -يَعْنِي أَصْحَابَهُمْ، قُلْتُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، إِنَّ فِيهِمُ النِّسَاءَ وَالصِّبْيَانَ، وَهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ مِثْلَ هَذِهِ الدَّقَائِقَ! قَالَ: أَلَيْسَ فِيكُمْ مَنْ رَأَى الْمَنَامَاتِ؟ قَالَ رَجُلٌ: بَلَى، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْمَهْدِيَّ فِي الْمَنَامِ، فَأَمَرَنِي بِطَاعَتِكَ، وَرَأَيْتُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ -يَعْنِي أَحْمَدَ الْحَسَنَ- فَكَتَبَ لِي: إِنَّهُ فِي ضَلَالٍ بَعِيدٍ، وَحَكَى رِجَالٌ آخَرُونَ مَنَامَاتٍ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ الْمَنْصُورُ: فَأَلْزِمُوهُمْ بِمَا أَلْزَمُوا بِهِ أَنْفُسَهُمْ! قُولُوا لَهُمْ: إِنْ كَانَ الْمَنَامُ حُجَّةً فَلَنَا الْحُجَّةُ عَلَيْكُمْ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ حُجَّةً فَلَا حُجَّةَ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا! ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَا تَأْخُذُوا بِالْمَنَامِ إِلَّا إِذَا كَانَ مَعَهُ آيَةٌ بَيِّنَةٌ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ فِيكَ مَنَامًا كَانَ مَعَهُ آيَةٌ بَيِّنَةٌ! أَتَأْذَنُ لِي أَنْ أَحْكِيَهُ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْمَنَامِ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَعْرِفَكَ، فَقَالَ لِي: إِنَّ الْمَهْدِيَّ سَاكِنٌ فِي بَلَدِكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ عَنْهُ غَافِلُونَ! قُلْتُ: وَأَيْنَ هُوَ؟! قَالَ: ائْتِ مَدِينَةَ كَذَا وَسُوقَ كَذَا وَدَارَ كَذَا! فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَوَجَدْتُهُ دَارَكَ! قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ، وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ الْمُضِلِّينَ.

Translation of the saying:

Walid ibn Mahmoud al-Sajistani informed us, he said: “We were in Mansoor’s presence, discussing those who have claimed this matter unrightfully. Then this man -meaning Ahmad al-Hasan- was mentioned. So I said: “May I be sacrificed for you, I talked to his followers. So I found them to be among the most foolish people! They use dreams to establish proof against people, and when they are talked to about it, they say: ‘There is a narration that Satan does not appear with the face of the Prophet and his family!’ He said: “Do they know the face of the Prophet and his family?!” I said: “No!” He said: “Then there is no proof for them in this narration. The proof in it is only for those who know the face of the Prophet and his family -meaning their companions!” I said: “May I be sacrificed for you, there are women and children among them, and they do not understand such subtleties!” He said: “Are there not among you those who have seen dreams?!” A man said: “Yes. I saw the Mahdi in a dream, then he commanded me to obey you, and I saw him again, then I asked him about this man -meaning Ahmad al-Hasan-, so he wrote to me: ‘He is in far error,’ and some other men also narrated dreams similar to this!” So Mansoor said: “Then oblige them to (accept) what they have obliged themselves to (accept)! Tell them: ‘If dreams are proof, then there is proof for us against you, and if they are not proof, then there is no proof for you against us!’” Then he said: “Do not trust dreams except when there is a clear sign with them!” A man said: “May I be sacrificed for you, I saw a dream about you that a clear sign was with it. Do you permit me to narrate it?” He said: “Yes.” The man said: “Before I knew you, I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, in a dream. Then he said to me: ‘Indeed, the Mahdi resides in your land while you are unaware of him!’ I said: ‘Where is he?!’ He said: ‘Go to such-and-such city, such-and-such street, and such-and-such house!’ So I went there and found that it was your house!” Mansoor said: “Praise be to Allah Who placed me among the Mahdis (meaning the guided ones) and did not place me among the misguided, misleading ones.”

7 . أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطَّالَقَانِيُّ، قَالَ: ذُكِرَ عِنْدَ الْمَنْصُورِ أَحْمَدُ الْحَسَنُ، فَقَالَ: أَدْرَكْتُ شَيْطَانَهُ بِمُلْتَقَى الطَّرِيقَيْنِ، فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَقْتُلَهُ فَهَرَبَ مِنِّي! أَلَا وَاللَّهِ لَوْ قَتَلْتُهُ لَارْتَاحَ الرَّجُلُ كَأَنَّمَا نَشِطَ مِنْ عِقَالٍ! قُلْتُ: أَلَهُ شَيْطَانٌ -جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، وَيُقَالُ لَهُ الْمُتَكَوِّنُ، يَأْتِيهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ فِي كُلِّ صُورَةٍ فَيُغْوِيهِمْ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَا يَأْتِيهِمْ فِي صُورَةِ الْمَهْدِيِّ!

Translation of the saying:

Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Talaqani informed us, he said: Ahmad al-Hasan was mentioned in Mansoor’s presence. So he said: “I encountered his Satan at a crossroads. Then I wanted to kill him, but he escaped from me! By Allah, if I had killed him, the man would have felt relieved as if he had been released from shackles!” I said: “Is there a Satan for him, may I be sacrificed for you?” He said: “Yes, and his name is Mutakawwin. He comes to him and his companions with every face and deceives them, except that he does not come to them with the Mahdi’s face!”

8 . أَخْبَرَنَا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ السَّبْزَوَارِيُّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِلْمَنْصُورِ: أَدْرَكْتُ فِي إِيرَانَ رِجَالًا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ فُلَانًا -يَعْنِي قَائِدَهُمْ- هُوَ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ الَّذِي بَشَّرَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ! قَالَ: هَذَا مِمَّا قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿مَا لَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ[2]، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْخُرَاسَانِيَّ يَدْعُو إِلَى الْمَهْدِيِّ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا يَدْعُو إِلَى نَفْسِهِ! قُلْتُ: أَمَا لَهُ مِنْ آيَةٍ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ؟ قَالَ: عُقُولُكُمْ تَضْعُفُ عَنْ هَذَا يَا صَالِحُ! إِنَّهُ إِذَا قَامَ أَظْهَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ كَفًّا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ تُشِيرُ إِلَيْهِ فَتَقُولُ: هَذَا هَذَا! فَيَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا النَّاسُ وَيَمُدُّونَ إِلَيْهَا الْأَعْنَاقَ! قُلْتُ: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ! فَمَنْ يَشُكُّ فِيهِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ؟! قَالَ: يَشُكُّ فِيهِ الَّذِينَ يَتَكَبَّرُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ، وَإِنْ يَرَوْا كُلَّ آيَةٍ لَا يُؤْمِنُوا بِهَا! قُلْتُ: فَمَتَى يَقُومُ؟ قَالَ: إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ جَيْشُ الْغَضَبِ! قُلْتُ: وَمَا جَيْشُ الْغَضَبِ؟! قَالَ: رِجَالٌ يُغْضِبُهُمْ قَوْمُهُمْ، فَيَجْتَمِعُونَ إِلَيْهِ قَزَعًا كَقَزَعِ الْخَرِيفِ، مِنْ بِلَادٍ شَتَّى، مَا بَيْنَ الْوَاحِدِ وَالْإِثْنَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةِ وَالْأَرْبَعَةِ وَالْخَمْسَةِ وَالسِّتَّةِ وَالسَّبْعَةِ وَالثَّمَانِيَةِ وَالتِّسْعَةِ وَالْعَشْرَةِ! قُلْتُ: لِمَاذَا يَجْتَمِعُونَ إِلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ: لِمَا يَرَوْنَ عِنْدَهُ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ، فَإِنَّهُ يُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ الدِّينَ كَمَا أَنْزَلَهُ اللَّهُ، فَيَنْفِي عَنْهُ تَحْرِيفَ الْغَالِينَ وَانْتِحَالَ الْمُبْطِلِينَ وَتَأْوِيلَ الْجَاهِلِينَ، عَلَى مِثَالٍ جَدِيدٍ عَلَى الْعَرَبِ شَدِيدٌ! قُلْتُ: لِمَاذَا؟! قَالَ: لِأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ! قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَفْعَلُ؟ قَالَ: يَقُومُ، فَيَأْخُذُ الرَّايَةَ مِنْ قَوْمٍ ظَالِمِينَ، ثُمَّ يَحْمِلُهَا فَيُسَلِّمُهَا إِلَى الْمَهْدِيِّ! قُلْتُ: كَيْفَ يَأْتِي الْمَهْدِيَّ وَهُوَ غَائِبٌ؟ قَالَ: يَكْتُبُ إِلَيْهِ الْمَهْدِيُّ أَنِ ائْتِنِي سِرًّا، فَيَأْتِيهِ عَلَى حِينِ غَفْلَةٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَيُبَايِعُهُ، قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَفْعَلُ؟ قَالَ: ثُمَّ يَفْعَلُ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ! قَالَ صَالِحٌ: فَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَزِيدُنِي عَلَى هَذَا شَيْئًا، فَخَرَجْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ فَلَقِيتُ عِيسَى بْنَ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، فَحَدَّثْتُهُ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: مَا قَوْلُهُ إِلَّا كَقَوْلِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، ﴿قَالَ نَكِّرُوا لَهَا عَرْشَهَا نَنْظُرْ أَتَهْتَدِي أَمْ تَكُونُ مِنَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَهْتَدُونَ![3] قُلْتُ: فَتَرَى أَنَّهُ هُوَ؟! قَالَ: فَمَنْ يَعْلَمُ مِثْلَ هَذَا إِلَّا هُوَ؟!

Translation of the saying:

Salih ibn Muhammad al-Sabzawari informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “I found people in Iran who said that so-and-so -meaning their leader- is the very Khorasani about whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, gave glad tidings!” He said: “This is one of the things about which Allah Almighty has said: ‘They have no knowledge of that, and they do nothing but guess.’” Then he said: “Indeed, Khorasani invites toward the Mahdi, and this man invites toward himself!” I said: “Will there not be a sign for Khorasani, may I be sacrificed for you?!” He said: “Your intellects cannot understand this, O Salih! When he rises, Allah reveals the palm of a hand in the heaven for him that points to him and says: ‘This! This!’ So people look at it and crane their necks toward it! I said: “Allahu Akbar! Then who would doubt him?!” He said: “Those who behave arrogantly on Earth unrightfully and if they see any sign, they do not believe in it would doubt him!” I said: “When will he rise?!” He said: “When the army of anger gathers around him!” I said: “What is the army of anger?!” He said: “Men that their people anger them. Then they gather around him, dispersed like dispersed cloudlets, from various lands, one by one, two by two, three by three, four by four, five by five, six by six, seven by seven, eight by eight, nine by nine, and ten by ten!” I said: “Why do they gather around him?!” He said: “For the knowledge that they see with him; because he teaches religion to people as Allah has sent it down. So he removes from it the distortion of exaggerators, the fabrication of falsifiers, and the interpretation of the ignorant, with a new pattern that is hard for the Arabs! I said: “Why?!” He said: “Because he is not from the Arabs!” I said: “Then what does he do?” He said: “He rises up. Then he takes the flag from an oppressive people and carries it until he hands it over to the Mahdi!” I said: “How does he go to the Mahdi while he is absent?!” He said: “The Mahdi writes to him, (saying,) ‘Come to me secretly.’ So while people are unaware, he goes to him and pledges allegiance to him!” I said: “Then what does he do?!” He said: “Then he does whatever Allah wills!” Salih said: “Then I realized he would not tell me anything more than that. So I left him and saw Isa ibn Abd al-Hamid. Then I informed him of it. So he said: “His words are not different from the words of Sulayman, peace be upon him, ‘He said: Disguise her throne for her so we may see whether she recognizes (it) or is one of those who do not find a way (to recognize it)!’” I said: “Do you believe that he is the one?!” He said: “Then who knows such a thing other than the one?!”

9 . أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الطَّبَرِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْمَنْصُورَ يَقُولُ: مَنْ خَرَجَ يَدْعُو النَّاسَ إِلَى عَصَبِيَّةٍ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ! قُلْتُ: وَمَا دُعَاؤُهُ إِلَى الْعَصَبِيَّةِ؟ قَالَ: دُعَاؤُهُ إِلَى سُلْطَانِ قَوْمِهِ، أَوْ سُلْطَانِ حِزْبِهِ، أَوْ سُلْطَانِ مَذْهَبِهِ! ثُمَّ قَالَ: كُلُّ دُعَاءٍ غَيْرَ دُعَائِي هَذَا فَهُوَ كُفْرٌ وَضَلَالٌ وَتَفْرِيقٌ بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ.

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Habib al-Tabari informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor say: “Whoever emerges and invites people toward fanaticism, the curse of Allah, the Angles, and all people is upon him!” I said: “What is his invitation toward fanaticism?!” He said: “His invitation toward the rule of his people, the rule of his party, or the rule of his sect!” Then he said: “Any invitation other than this invitation of mine (toward the Mahdi’s rule) is disbelief, misguidance, and division among Muslims.”[4]
