Translation of the saying:

Abu Ibrahim al-Samarqandi informed us, he said: I was with Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani. He entered a mosque to perform prayer in it. Then he saw a young man crying in a corner with his tears flowing down his cheeks. So he stood near him and said: “What makes you cry, O servant of Allah?! If you are crying for the world, it will indeed come to an end, whether you cry or not, and if you are crying for the Hereafter, it will indeed arrive, whether you cry or not!” The young man said: “I am crying over my confusion about my religion! Flags have been raised (on every side), and I do not know which is which. So I fear that I may deny the truth or affirm falsehood, thus becoming one of the misguided!” Mansoor Said: “‘Undoubtedly, Allah leads astray whomever He wills and guides toward Himself whoever turns (to Him).’ So what prevents you from making the du‘a of those who turn to Allah?” He said: “What is the du‘a of those who turn to Allah? He said: “Say after each prayer:

O Allah! Let me tread the most exemplary path and make me die and live upon Your religion. Grant me success in acting upon the most correct of affairs when they become difficult for me, the purest of deeds when they become confusing, and the most acceptable of religions when they become contradictory. Send peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. Show the truth as the truth to me so I may follow it and falsehood as falsehood so I may avoid it and do not make them alike for me or I may follow my desire without guidance from You. Make my desire pursuant to Your obedience, take from my self what pleases You, and guide me by Your permission in a matter of the truth over which there is disagreement, for You guide whomever You will to the straight path.”

Abu Ibrahim said: Nothing then amazed me except that after a few months, I saw this young man among a group of our companions. Then I said to him: “Do you recognize me?” He said: “Yes, you are the one who was with Mansoor in the mosque when he taught me the du‘a of those who turn to Allah!” I said: “Yes. What guided you to this?” He said: “Allah guided me through that du‘a! One day, I was in the mosque supplicating with it. Then I heard two men behind me arguing. Then one of them said to the other: ‘People were not fair! A man came to them and invited them toward Muhammad Umar, so they responded to him, then a man came to them and invited them toward Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, so they responded to him, then a man came to them and invited them toward the Mahdi, but they did not respond to him! No, By Allah, that was not fair!’ So my body trembled. Then I turned toward him and said: ‘Who was the man who invited people toward the Mahdi, but they did not respond to him?!’ He said: ‘A man from Khorasan called Mansoor!’ I said: ‘Where can this man be found?’ He said: ‘I do not know, but one of his companions is here who can lead you to him if he finds any good in you.’ So I met him and he led me to Mansoor. Then I realized that he was the one who taught me the du‘a of those who turn to Allah, and Allah Almighty answered it!”
