Saying

Translation of the saying:

Zakir ibn Ma‘roof al-Khorasani informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “They say that you are a polytheist!” He said: “Glory be to God! What is my polytheism?!” I said: “Your words that you say dominion is in the hand of God, not in the hands of people!” So he laughed in astonishment at their words and said: “Is one who considers the work for God alone a polytheist, and one who considers it for those apart from Him a monotheist?! ‘How badly they judge!’” I said: “They say that you are a rafidi!” He said: “Glory be to God! What is my rafd?!” I said: “It is that you put the Ahl al-Bayt first!” So he laughed in astonishment at their words and said: “This is not rafd; rafd is only charging the two sheikhs (i.e., Abu Bakr and Umar) with disbelief or reviling them!” Then a man from our companions entered the room with a jar in his hand, then he left it upside down, then Mansoor pointed at him and said: “If God has turned their intellects upside down, as he has turned his jar upside down, what is my sin?!”

Translation of the saying:

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Harawi informed us, he said: A man asked Mansoor about his opinion on the Caliphate, so he said: “We say that the Ahl al-Bayt were more entitled to it and worthy of it.” So the man said: “Then what is the difference between you and the rafidah?” He said: “The difference between us and them is that they speak ill of the Sahabah, and we say nothing but good about them.” The man said: “Is this anything but the lesser innovation?!” He said: “The innovation of the rafidah is less serious than your innovation, but you do not understand!”

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Habib al-Tabari informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor say: “How odd are those who consider whoever says that the Ahl al-Bayt are the worthiest a rafidi! Do they not know that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, brought Ali and Fatimah close and seated them in front of himself and seated Hasan and Husain on his thighs, then he wrapped his garment over them and recited the words of God Almighty that has said: ‘Indeed, God wants to remove any impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and make you completely pure,’ then he said: ‘O God! These are my Ahlul Bayt, and my Ahlul Bayt are the worthiest’?!” I said: “May I be sacrificed for you, then who are the rafidah?” He said: “They are those who exaggerate about the Ahl al-Bayt, so they say that they have knowledge of the unseen, take possession of the creation and provision of sustenance whenever they want, are better than the Messengers of Firm Resolve, and much of what has been revealed about them has been omitted from the Quran, then they charge Abu Bakr and Umar with disbelief, so they say that they became disbelievers after their conversion to Islam, but rather they were hypocrites from the first day, and that they struck Fatimah and killed her, so they curse and insult them, then they rebuke Uthman, so they say that he distorted the Quran and was such-and-such, so they curse and insult him, then they accuse the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, so they say something about her that if anyone says about their wives, they will break his head with stones, then they get into the Muhajirin and the Ansar, so they say that they apostatized from Islam except for three or four of them, and disown them, ‘and they have deeds, other than that, which they do!’” I said: “When were they called the rafidah?” He said: “Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husain would consider Ali ibn Abi Talib to be better than the rest of the Sahabah of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, but he would say nothing but good about Abu Bakr and Umar, like the manner of his fathers, then, when he appeared in Kufa among his companions who had pledged allegiance to him, he heard some of them speaking ill of them, so he denied them to do so, so they stopped helping him and said: ‘We do not help you until you tell us your opinion of Abu Bakr and Umar who oppressed your ancestor, Ali ibn Abi Talib!’ So Zayd said: ‘I say nothing but good about them, and I did not hear my father (Ali ibn al-Husain) saying anything but good about them.’ So they rejected him, and it was then that they were called the rafidah[5], and today they reject me too as yesterday they rejected him, So may God kill them, to where are they being misled?!”

Translation of the saying:

Abd al-Salam ibn Abd al-Qayyum al-Balkhi informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor say: “May God make the rafawid ugly! Were it not for them, people would not have stayed away from the Ahl al-Bayt after we invited them toward them, but they drove them away and made them fall into fitnah, to the extent that we have become more astray with them and more hated by them than those who invite them toward tyrants and corrupters!” I said: “Who are the rafawid, may I be sacrificed for you?” He said: “Those who curse or revile the Muhajirin and the Ansar, while they have been commanded to ask for forgiveness for them. Know that, I swear to God, they are not from us, and we are not from them, and they are more harmful to us than disbelievers and the nasibis.”

Translation of the saying:

Hashim ibn Ubayd al-Khujandi informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “They consider you a rafidi; because you mention the Ahl al-Bayt a lot.” So he said: “Leave the fools who are like madmen! Did they not consider al-Shafi‘i a rafidi until he said: ‘Stand in Muhassab from Mina and shout ... at whoever sits or stands in Khayf ... that if loving the family of Muhammad is rafd ... then let the jinn and humankind bear witness that I am a rafidi’?!”

Translation of the saying:

Walid ibn Mahmoud al-Sajistani informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor say: “Whoever considers me a rafidi is a nasibi, and whoever considers me a nasibi is a rafidi, and whoever considers me a polytheist has nothing to do with Islam.”

! Translation of the saying:

Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Bari al-Qandahari informed us, he said: I asked Mansoor about the words of God Almighty that has said: “And your Lord creates and chooses whatever He wills, they have no choice; Glorified and Exalted is God above what they associate with Him.” So he said: “(God) creates whatever He wills and chooses whomever He wills, it is not for them to choose a prophet or a ruler, so whoever chooses a prophet or a ruler whom God has not chosen, he has associated a partner (with God), and God is Glorified and Exalted above what they associate with Him.” I said: “We have not heard anything about the ruler!” He said: “Woe to you, have you not heard the words of God that has said: ‘He appointed Prophets among you and made (some of) you rulers’?!” I said: “Yes, but that was in the Children of Israel.” He said: “It was one of the ways of those who were before you, and God did not mention it unless ‘to make (all this) clear to you and to guide you to the ways of those who were before you.’ Have you not heard the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, who has said: ‘Indeed, the ways of those who were before you will come to you’?!” I said: “Who is the ruler?” He said: “The Caliph.” I said: “Did God choose a Caliph after the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family?” He said: “Yes, as he did so after the past Prophets. Has he not said: ‘He will surely appoint them as Caliphs on the earth, as He appointed some people before them as Caliphs’?!” I said: “With what did He indicate him?” He said: “With a will from the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family.” I said: “Was (that will) hidden or open?!” He said: “It was open, but most of the people did not understand it.” I said: “How could they not understand it when the Muhajirin and the Ansar were among them?!” He said: “Which part of it is strange to you?! Were they not the same people about whom God said: ‘What is the matter with these people who hardly understand any word?!’” I said: “Did they narrate that (will) or conceal it?” He said: “Rather, they narrated it.” I said: “So why did those who came after them not understand it?! While the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, has said: ‘Many are those who carry knowledge but have no knowledge themselves, and many are those who convey knowledge to one more learned than themselves.’” He said: “They paid attention to narration and did not pay attention to cognition (i.e., examining and understanding it) and said: ‘We have found our fathers upon a religion, and we have been guided by following them,’ except for a few of them who were accused of innovation.” I said: “Who was that Caliph?” He said: “Do not ask about this; because God has said: ‘Do not ask about things that if disclosed to you, may displease you,’ ‘some people before you asked about it, then disbelieved in it!’” I said: “I am only seeking knowledge, and I am not fanatical about any sect!” He said: “He was a man from the Ahl al-Bayt. Have you not heard the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, who said: ‘I leave among you two Caliphs: the Book of God and my Ahl al-Bayt’?!” I said: “It appears that you mean Ali!” He said: “What do you deny about it?! Indeed, Dawud killed Goliath, so ‘God gave him dominion and wisdom and taught him what He willed,’ while Ali killed several Goliaths, such as Talha ibn Abi Talha, the flag-bearer of polytheists on the day of Badr, Amr ibn Abd al-Wud, the only horseman of the Quraysh on the day of Ahzab, and Marhab, the hero of Jews on the day of Khaibar! So what do you think God has done to him?!” I said: “I do not deny anything about it, but they say this is sarcasm to Abu Bakr and Umar!” He said: “Leave them; because they have taken those two as gods other than God or as prophets after Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, while I say nothing but good about them.” I said: “So when Ali passed away, did God choose another Caliph after him?” He said: “Yes, because the earth does not remain empty of a Caliph whom God has chosen.” I said: “With what did He indicate him?” He said: “With a will from Ali, and he made a will to Hasan.” I said: “And so on forever?” He said: “Yes, and this is the words of God that has said: ‘They are offspring of one another, and God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.’” I said: “Who is the Caliph today?” He said: “A man from the Ahl al-Bayt; because God started with them and will end with them.” I said: “Do you mean the Mahdi?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “They say that he has not been born yet!” He said: “How do they know?! ‘Do they have (knowledge of) the unseen, so they write it?!’” I said: “So do you say that he was born?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “In this case, what is the difference between you and them?!” He said: “Woe to you, one who proves is not like one who denies, and one who knows is not like one who does not know.” I said: “So why does he not appear?! He said: “If he appears before his name is called out on the earth and in the heaven, he is not the Mahdi!” So I contemplated his words for a moment and then said: “I swear to God, you did not say anything except with the Quran and the Sunnah, but that is rafd with them!” So he said: “I do not care what it is with them after I said it with the Quran and the Sunnah! So they may call it rafd if they want, and they may call it disbelief if they want; because it is faith!”

Translation of the saying:

Isa ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Jowzjani informed us, he said: Some men from various sects came to Mansoor to debate with him about the Caliphate, so he debated with them about it, and one of the things that he said to them was: “Do you not fear God?! Do you not repent?! Because God told you to say: ‘O God! You are the Owner of dominion! You give dominion to whomever You will and take dominion from whomever You will,’ then you opposed Him and said: ‘We are the owner of dominion! We give dominion to whomever we will and take dominion from whomever we will,’ while you know (the end of) those who changed the words that they were told to say, so God sent down a punishment from the heaven upon them for their wrongdoing[23]!” Then he saw them looking at him (in astonishment and denial), so he said: “What is the matter with you?! You look at me like someone who becomes unconscious on the verge of death! Do you not understand my words?!” They said: “No.” He said: “Those before you were also the same, they did not understand the words of God and His Prophet until they became divided and disagreed after clear proofs came to them!” They said: “We see that you too defame the Sahabah, as the rafidah do so!” He said: “Woe to you, if what I say is defaming the Sahabah, then what you say is also defaming them, just like what I say!” They said: “How so?!” He said: “Do you not know that the Sahabah were two groups: a group said what I say, and a group said what you say?! So if I defame a group of them, you too defame another group of them! Will you not use your intellects?! So if there is no choice but to defame, then defame the group that disobeyed God and His Prophet, and do not defame the group that obeyed Them! Will you not be mindful?!” So they were confounded, fell to thinking, and looked at each other, then they said: “We swear to God, no one had ever spoken to us the way you did, and if we were not afraid that people would say we became Shia, we would follow you!” He said: “Woe to you, are you afraid of people and not afraid of God to Whom you will be gathered?! You are the scholars of your people, so do not be content to be followers of their ignorant ones, ‘and put your trust in God if you are believers!’” Then he gave the words of the poet as an example and said: “O my heart! Leave people to say whatever they want, and rely on God, the Lord of created beings, and do not expect benefit or harm from other than Him, for Blessed is the Honorable Lord and Creator.”

Translation of the saying:

Yunus ibn Abdullah al-Khatlani informed us, he said: Mansoor sent me to those who defamed him for putting the Ahl al-Bayt first, and said to me: “Tell them: Fear God and do not defame Salman; because the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: ‘Salman is from us, the Ahl al-Bayt,’ and said: ‘Salman is saturated with knowledge,’ and Salman put the Ahl al-Bayt first and said: ‘If you had placed the Caliphate in the Ahl al-Bayt of your Prophet, You would have benefited from every blessing,’ and do not defame Ammar; because the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: ‘Ammar was never given a choice between two matters unless he chose the one with more guidance in it,’ and said: ‘Follow the way of Ammar,’ and Ammar put the Ahl al-Bayt first and said: ‘O people! God has dignified us with His Prophet and honored us with His religion, so how long will you keep this matter away from the Ahl al-Bayt of your Prophet?!’ and do not defame Abu Dhar; because the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: ‘The sky has not cast a shadow on and the earth has not carried a person who would speak more truthfully than Abu Dhar,’ and Abu Dhar put the Ahl al-Bayt first and said: ‘They are like Nuh’s ark, whoever boarded it was saved, and whoever failed to reach it perished,’” and he mentioned other men from the Sahabah, who put the Ahl al-Bayt first, so I went to those who defamed him, and conveyed (this message) to them, then I swear to God, they did not give me any answer.

! Translation of the saying:

Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Taloqani informed us, he said: We were a group in the presence of Mansoor, then a man asked him about the words of God Almighty that has said: “Among the Believers are men who have been true to their covenant with God, so some of them fulfilled their vows (and passed away), and some of them are waiting, and they did not change anything.” So he said: “They are Salman, Abu Dhar, Ammar, Miqdad, Hudhayfah, Jabir, and those like them.” The man said: “Is Ali ibn Abi Talib not one of them?!” So His Honor looked at us in astonishment and said: “Do you not hear what he says?! I mention the party of Ali to him, and he says to me: ‘Is Ali ibn Abi Talib not one of them?!’” I said: “May I be sacrificed for you, were the Sahabah of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, two parties?” He said: “Yes, and his wives too were two parties: one party in which there were Aisha, Hafsa, Safiyyah, and Sawdah, and the other party in which there were Umm Salamah and the rest of the wives of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, and the party of Aisha did not like Ali, and the party of Umm Salamah liked Ali, and they quarreled with each other, then, after the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, the party of Aisha prevailed and surpassed in dominion, so the hatred of Ali appeared among people until they conspired against him, kept him and his offspring from dominion, and helped every stubborn oppressor against them, while the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, liked Ali and his offspring, ordered doing good to them, and said: ‘I will leave something among you that if you hold firmly to it, you will never go astray after me: the Book of God and my Ahl al-Bayt,’ and Umar ibn Khattab said: ‘The Book of God is sufficient for us,’ unlike the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, who considered his family to be in conjunction with the Book of God, and the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, was more knowledgeable about the benefit of his Ummah and more benevolent to them than Umar, ‘and it is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when God and His Messenger have decreed a matter, to have a choice regarding the matter, and whoever disobeys God and His Prophet has gone far astray,’ then, when death approached the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, he said to his Sahabah: ‘Bring me the shoulder blade of a camel so that I write for you something after which you will never go astray,’ so Umar said: ‘The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, is delirious (due to sickness), and you have the Quran. The Book of God is sufficient for us!’ Then the Sahabah disagreed and quarreled, so some of them said: ‘Bring the shoulder blade of a camel so that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, writes for you,’ and some of them said what Umar said! Then, when the clamor and disagreement flared up, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: ‘Leave me!’ Then ibn Abbas wept until his tears wet the pebbles, and he said: ‘it was a great disaster that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, was prevented from writing for them that writing because of their disagreement and clamor!’ So the Sahabah of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, were two parties: the party of Umar and the party of Ali; the party of Ali stood up for the Book of God and the Ahl al-Bayt of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, and the party of Umar that said: ‘the Book of God is sufficient for us!’ Then, when the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, passed away, the party of Umar prevailed and surpassed in dominion, so their view and the turning away from the Ahl al-Bayt of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, spread among people, and the party of Ali was disparaged and expelled, and they were called the rafidah, while the rafidah are none but those of them who exaggerated, and the party of Umar was called Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah due to their large numbers and predominance! So I cry out to God for this ignorance and fanaticism! How can the followers of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, who accepted his words be the rafidah, and those who rejected him and accepted the words of ibn Khattab be Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah?! This is not possible! But people were deceived and followed their desires, and Satan made it fair-seeming to them and prevented them from the path, and they were a people devoid of good! Like ‘those who were given a portion of the Book and they would believe in false gods and taghut and say about disbelievers: “They are more guided than those who have believed!” They are those whom God has cursed, and whomever God curses, you will find no helper for him. Or do they have a share in the dominion, in which case they would not give (this group of) people even the speck on a date-stone?! Or do they envy (this group of) people for what God has given them of His grace?! Because We have given the family of Ibrahim the Book and wisdom, and We have granted them a great dominion!’ Then there have come after them generations who are fools, imitators, pretenders, fanatics, arrogant, reckless, liars against God and His Messenger, misguided, sinners, and wicked like Satans! They have no knowledge about the truth, no insight in religion, no cognition of men, and no fairness in judgment! ‘They are the deaf and the dumb and the blind, so they do not use the intellect!’” Then he fell silent for a while as if there were birds on our heads, and anger was apparent on his face, then he said: “Be from the party of Ali; because the party of Ali will be the successful ones!”

Explanation of the saying:

These perfect words of wisdom are sufficient for those who have sound intellects and fear God and the Last Day, ﴿وَمَا تُغْنِي الْآيَاتُ وَالنُّذُرُ عَنْ قَوْمٍ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ[40]; “and signs and warnings do not benefit a people who do not believe.” To learn more about His Honor’s opinion on the rafidah, refer to saying 175, and to learn more about his opinion on the Sahabah, refer to saying 128 from his pure sayings.
