Translation of the saying:

Walid ibn Mahmoud al-Sajistani informed us, he said: I wrote to Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani and asked him about what people do when mourning for the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family. So he wrote to me: “There is nothing wrong with remembering the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, describing their actions, and praising them rightfully, and it is absolutely forbidden to lie about them or slander them, and there is nothing wrong with crying over their sufferings or composing poetry about them if it is true, and it is detestable to strike heads, faces, chests, and backs, as common people do; because of the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, who said: “Whoever strikes faces, tears the clothes, and invites (people) toward the ways of the time of ignorance is not from us,” and the words of His Excellency, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, who said: “I hate whoever shaves his hair, laments loudly, and tears (his clothes in grief),” and the only thing that is desirable is crying, and there is nothing legitimate beyond that; because of the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, who said: “Whatever comes from the eye and from the heart is from Allah the Exalted, the Majestic and pertains to compassion, and whatever comes from the hand and from the tongue is from Satan,” and such is moving about on the earth with invented flags and signs, for they are all innovations, every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to the fire, and there is nothing wrong with gathering in mosques and houses to praise them, mention their sufferings, cry over them, or console those who love them as long as there is no lie, insult, striking, injury, squandering, or delay in performing prayer at the beginning of its time, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, cried over his son Ibrahim, remembered Khadijah, peace be upon her, and then praised and cried over her, and urged (people) to cry over Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, and Fatimah, peace be upon her, cried over the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, and praised him, and Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh, may Allah be pleased with him, was praised at his grave, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, heard and did not forbid it, so these are all Sunnah, and only innovations are forbidden.”

Translation of the saying:

Walid ibn Mahmoud informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “I informed a group of these Shias about your prohibition of striking faces and tearing the clothes while mourning for the Ahl al-Bayt, so they found it unbearable and difficult (to accept) and said: ‘Zainab the daughter of Ali, may Allah be pleased with her, struck her face and tore her clothes upon her brother’s martyrdom!’” He said: “They lied against Zainab the daughter of Ali! Did they not know that her brother made a will to her on the night of Ashura and swore her (saying), ‘When I am killed, do not strike the face or tear the clothes because of me’?! So did they think that she disobeyed her brother and did not act on his will?! No, by Allah. Rather she obeyed him and was a righteous and pious woman.” Then he said: “Whoever knows the right of Husain shall not strike the face or tear the clothes because of him and shall act on his will, as Zainab the daughter of Ali did.”

Translation of the saying:

Isa ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Jowzajani informed us, he said: Some men from the Shias came to him and asked him about their actions during the months of Muharram and Safar. So he said to them: “You want me to dance to your tune, but I speak nothing but the truth! So remember the master of the youth of Heaven and cry over him, and do not strike your heads, chests, and backs because of him, for I swear to Allah, if he were among you, he would prohibit you from doing so, as he prohibited his sister Zainab!” The men then left in anger. Then I said to him: “I wish you would leave them to strike their heads until they died! Do you not see that they harbor malice against you?!” He said: “Glory be to Allah! Then where is forbidding wrong?!”

Translation of the saying:

Abd al-Salam ibn Abd al-Qayyum informed us, he said: A man from the Shias came to him and said to him: “Are you the one who detests striking faces and heads -that is, in mourning for Husain?!” He said: “No, but Allah and His Messenger detest it! “The man said: “Do you not know that Husain’s wives ran out while striking their faces when he was killed on that way?!” He said: “He prohibited them from doing so!” The man said: “But they did so!” He said: “Then we do not follow them in their disobedience!” The man said: “Zainab the daughter of Ali was among them!” He said: “How do you know who was among them, you fool?! I swear to Allah, she was more God-fearing than to disobey her brother and strike her face in front of men!” Then he said: “(Assuming this is the case,) we have not been commanded to obey her, but rather we have been commanded to obey Husain.”

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Balkhi informed us, he said: Mansoor passed by a group of the Shias who were striking their backs with chains. So he said: “Who are these people?!” We said: “A group who claim that they are from the followers of Husain!” He said: “They are lying! If they were his followers, they would follow him! Do they not know that he prohibited such actions?!” We said: “They have scholars in Iran who order them to do so!” He said: “Yes, it is a bad habit that I know from Akhzam!”

Explanation of the saying:

His statement: “It is a bad habit that I know from Akhzam” is a proverb among the Arabs. “Akhzam” was the name of a man from the Tayy tribe, and this proverb means that he knows about this excessive and folk approach of scholars in Iran.

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Balkhi informed us, he said: We were on a way with Mansoor. Then some Shia men passed us while striking their chests and backs and saying: “Here I am, O Husain! Here I am, O Husain!” Then he turned toward us and said: “Know that Husain disowns them, as Ja‘far ibn Muhammad disowned them!” We said: “Did Ja‘far ibn Muhammad disown them?!” He said: “Yes, he was informed that some men from the people of Kufa were saying: ‘Here I am, O Ja‘far ibn Muhammad! Here I am!’ So he disowned them and said: ‘The Talbiyah of the Prophets was not like this! They would say: Here I am, O Allah! Here I am. You have no partner!’” Then Mansoor said: “Know that, I swear to Allah, were it not for these lowly ones, people would have entered upon this matter[1] in droves, but they changed it and made it ugly and hateful!”

Translation of the saying:

Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Shirazi informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor: “We gather in houses and remember what befell Husain ibn Ali in Karbala.” He said: “There is nothing wrong with it.” I said: “And we recite poetry about him.” He said: “There is nothing wrong with it.” I said: “And we cry over him.” He said: “There is nothing wrong with it.” I said: “And we curse his killer.” He said: “There is nothing wrong with it.” I said: “And we strike our chests and heads.” He said: “As for this, no; because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, prohibited it.” Then he said: “Are you not pleased to do what you have been commanded, abandon what you have been prohibited, and then meet Husain in Heaven?!”

Translation of the saying:

Yunus ibn Abdullah al-Khatlani informed us, he said: Mansoor went to his companions on the day of Ashura while they were engaged in discussion. Then he said to them: “May Allah have mercy on one of you who remembers the son of the daughter of His Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, and then cries over him! Know, by Allah, that they killed him while he was inviting them toward Heaven and they were inviting him toward the fire!” (Yunus) said: “So we gathered around him, remembered Husain ibn Ali, and cried over him, and it was as if I could see Mansoor’s tears flowing down his cheeks, yet no sobbing or lamenting was heard from him!”

Translation of the saying:

Abdullah Ibn Habib al-Tabari informed us, he said: Mansoor entered a house where a group of the Shias were gathered, remembering Husain’s tragedies and crying over him. So he sat among them until one of them said: “I am Husain’s dog!” So when he said this, Mansoor got up and left, saying: “By Allah, Husain did not come to them so that they would be dogs! Did they not know that the Angels would not enter a house with a dog in it?!” Then he went to another house where a group of the Shias were gathered, remembering Husain’s tragedies and crying over him. So he sat among them until they removed their clothes and struck their chests in unison. So when they did that, Mansoor got up and left, saying: “We accompany you in the Sunnah and part company with you in bid‘ah!”

Translation of the saying:

Abd al-Hamid ibn Bakhtiar informed us, he said: “Mansoor heard a man hold a wedding feast on the day of Ashura. So he said: “Uf Uf! Does he not know that this is a day when Allah got angry with the inhabitants of the earth?! By Allah, if his son had been killed on this day, he would not have held a wedding feast on it, but the son of the Messenger of Allah was killed on it!” Then he said: “Make it a day of your sorrow; because a people before you made it a day of their joy, so Allah got angry with them -that is, the Umayyads!”

Translation of the saying:

Ali ibn Isma‘il al-Damghani informed us, he said: I asked Mansoor about fasting on the day of Ashura. So he said: “There is nothing wrong with it.” Then he said: “Do not fast on it unless you fast (a day) before it or after it, and do not fast on it out of seeing a good omen in it; because only the Jews and those who did wrong saw a good omen in it, and there is nothing wrong with getting married on it if it coincides with it, and it is detested only because of tabors (that is, celebration and joy).”

Translation of the saying:

Hashim ibn Ubayd al-Khujandi informed us, he said: I asked the scholar (i.e., Mansoor) about the words of Allah Almighty: “And remind them of the Days of Allah.” So he said: “The day on which Allah sent His Prophet is one of them, the day on which he migrated to Medina is one of them, the day of Badr is one of them, the day of Ahzab is one of them, the day of the conquest of Mecca is one of them,” and he mentioned some other days. Then he said: “And the day of Ashura is one of them, on which the pure, pious Husain ibn Ali was killed on the bank of the Euphrates!” I said: “What was the matter with him that he rose up while Abdullah ibn Umar prohibited him (from doing so)?!” He said: “Abdullah ibn Umar prohibited him from (doing what was) right!”

Translation of the saying:

Salih ibn Muhammad al-Sabzawari informed us, he said: I heard Mansoor say: “Do not commit fornication; because, by Allah, none but love children killed the Prophets, and none but a love child killed Husain ibn Ali!” Then he lowered his voice and said: “What things that Abu Abdullah saw from the black, white dog!”

Translation of the saying:

Hasan ibn Qasim al-Tehrani informed us, he said: I asked Mansoor about visiting the grave of Husain. So he said: “Visit it, send peace upon him, and ask Allah for your needs.” I said: “How shall I send peace upon him at his grave?” He said: “Say: ‘Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah. Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that you performed prayer, gave Zakat, enjoined right, forbade wrong, and fought in the way of Allah as it ought to be fought until death came to you. So may Allah curse the one who killed you, and may Allah curse the one who ordered it, and may Allah curse the one who became aware of it and then was pleased with it. I disavow them toward Allah!’” I said: “Shall I circumambulate his grave?” He said: “No, and do not perform prayer before it, but go to a side and perform prayer in some of the porticos.”
