Is it permissible for a woman to dye her hair or remove her eyebrows?
It is not permissible for a woman to dye her hair or remove her eyebrows in a way that causes a permanent change to her body, such that her hair color does not return or what she has removed from her eyebrows never grows back; because Allah Almighty has not created anything in her body except for a manifest or hidden benefit. Therefore, it is not permissible for her to damage any part of it. Allah Almighty has considered such actions as Satan’s commands and said, quoting him: ﴿وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ﴾[1]; “And I will surely command them, so they will change Allah’s creation.” However, there is no sin upon her if she dyes her hair or removes her eyebrows in a way that does not cause a permanent change, provided that it is not harmful to her body and is for legitimate purposes, such as beautifying herself for her husband; as one of our companions informed us, he said:
! إِنَّمَا يُغَيِّرُ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ مَنْ يُفْسِدُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: تَحْلِقُ الشَّعْرَ، وَلَا تَنْتِفُهُ فَتُؤْذِي بِذَلِكَ نَفْسَهَا»; “I asked Mansoor about a woman who removes hair from her face. So he said: ‘There is nothing wrong with it. Should she leave it to resemble men?!’ I said: ‘They say that it is changing the creation of Allah!’ He said: ‘Subhan Allah! Do they not pluck their armpit hair and shave their pubic hair?! Indeed, only one who damages the creation of Allah changes it.’ Then he said: ‘(A woman) should shave her hair and not pluck it, as she harms herself by doing so.’”
