Recently, I saw an Arab drinking camel urine as a cure. He claimed it was from the Sunnah of the Prophet and cited the books of the Sunnis and the Shias, which surprised me! How could it be stated in the books of the Sunnis and the Shias that camel urine is pure and a cure for diseases?
Drinking camel urine is not considered an act of the Sunnah; because it is not something that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, legislated. Rather, it is a desert method of treatment in ancient medicine that Arab physicians prescribed for some patients, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, permitted it for them when there was a necessity, and it is clear that drinking anything in times of necessity is permissible, without it being considered an act of the Sunnah; as Allah Almighty has said: ﴿فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ فِي مَخْمَصَةٍ غَيْرَ مُتَجَانِفٍ لِإِثْمٍ ۙ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ﴾[1]; “Whoever is driven by necessity to what is forbidden, without inclining to sin, then indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
However, it is not surprising that Allah has placed a cure for some diseases in camel urine; because He has placed cures for some diseases in things far more unpleasant, such as snake venom and scorpion stings; especially considering that camels in the desert consume water rich in minerals and pure, beneficial plants. Therefore, it is not unlikely that there is a cure in its urine; rather, it may be more probable than the existence of cures in some of the new and common chemical drugs with beautiful and deceptive packaging, which are produced solely for economic and profit-making motives. Healing comes only from Allah; He places it wherever He wills, and He is the All-Knowing, the Wise.
