Question & Answer

Did Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, have an existential superiority over others, including the previous Prophets? Some Quranists believe that he was not the best of the Prophets; as Muslims are not the best of nations; because the Quran states that the Children of Israel are better than the people of the world!

If “existential superiority” refers to an advantage in human qualities, then it is not proven for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family; because Allah Almighty has considered him in these qualities like all other people and said: ﴿قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ[1]; “Say: ‘I am only a human being like you.’” Therefore, any weakness arising from humanity that naturally exists in them also exists in him; such as the need for water, food, clothing, sleep, and a wife, susceptibility to disease, old age, and death, and even the possibility of experiencing some types of oversight and forgetfulness, which all arise from the limitations of human beings. However, if “existential superiority” refers to being more honorable in the sight of Allah, then it is undoubtedly proven for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family; because he is the seal of the Prophets[2], and by him the religion has been perfected and the blessing completed[3], and the covenant of the Prophets has been taken to believe in him and support him[4], and they have given glad tidings of his emergence to their nations[5], mentioned to them his descriptions and the descriptions of his followers[6], and ordered them to obey him[7]; since obedience to them does not suffice from obedience to him[8], and there is no meaning other than that for being more honorable in the sight of Allah. Therefore, Allah has considered His grace upon him great[9], granted him Kawthar, which is good in abundance that exceeds the usual[10], promised him “a Praiseworthy Position”[11], “a clear victory”[12], “a mighty help”[13], and “the prevailing over all religions”[14], made his message for all people[15], but rather sent him to the jinn as He has sent him to humankind[16], supported him with armies of Angels[17], prevented devils from approaching the heaven for his sake[18], and taken him on a journey by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa[19] and from there to the highest place in Heaven ﴿عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَى[20]; “by the lote tree of the utmost boundary,” and showed him some of His greatest signs[21], and in summary, He has granted him so much until he has become satisfied[22]; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

قَالَ: نَعَمْ وَكَانَ سَيِّدَ وُلْدِ آدَمَ»; “I asked Mansoor about the words of Allah Almighty to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family: ‘Perhaps your Lord will raise you to a Praiseworthy Position,’ what is the Praiseworthy Position? He said: ‘It is a means.’ I said: ‘What is the means?’ He said: ‘It is the highest position in Heaven that none can reach but one man, and The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, hoped to be him!’ I said: ‘Was he that man?’ He said: ‘Yes, and he was the master of the children of Adam.’”

What further clarifies this is the words of Allah Almighty: ﴿وَاتَّبِعُوا أَحْسَنَ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ [24]; “And follow the best of what has been revealed to you from your Lord”; because its intended meaning is that all of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran have been revealed from Allah, but people must follow the best of what has been revealed to them from Him, which is the Quran; as it is evident from His words: ﴿قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِكِتَابٍ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ هُوَ أَهْدَى مِنْهُمَا أَتَّبِعْهُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ[25]; “Say: ‘Then bring a book from Allah that is more guiding than them and I shall follow it, if you are truthful’”; since it indicates the obligation to follow the best of the Books revealed from Allah, and by this, it is understood that Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, is the best Prophet who came from Allah; because if it were not so, then following him would not be following the best of what has been revealed from Allah. This is the intended meaning of His Eminence Mansoor, may Allah Almighty protect him, by what he has said in reproaching those who have narrated from Ahl al-Hadith that Musa, peace be upon him, is better than Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family: “If they truly considered Musa, peace be upon him, superior to Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, then why did they not enter the Sharia of Musa, peace be upon him, instead of the Sharia of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, or follow the Torah instead of the Quran?!”[26] He has explained this in one of his unique words of wisdom, about which one of his companions informed us, he said:

; “I asked Mansoor about the words of Allah Almighty: ‘And indeed, We exalted some Prophets over some others.’ So he said: ‘Nuh, peace be upon him, was the best of the Prophets until Allah sent Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and Ibrahim, peace be upon him, was the best of the Prophets until Allah sent Musa, peace be upon him, and Musa, peace be upon him, was the best of the Prophets until Allah sent Isa, peace be upon him, and Isa, peace be upon him, was the best of the Prophets until Allah sent Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, and Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, was the best of the Prophets.’ I said: ‘What is the evidence for that?’ He said: ‘His words: ‘Follow the best of what has been revealed to you from your Lord,’ and the Prophets followed Nuh, peace be upon him, until Allah sent Ibrahim, peace be upon him. Then they followed Ibrahim, peace be upon him, until Allah sent Musa, peace be upon him. Then they followed Musa, peace be upon him, until Allah sent Isa, peace be upon him. Then they followed Isa, peace be upon him, until Allah sent Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, who is the seal of the Prophets. So whoever follows a Prophet other than him has not followed the best of what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and he is among the losers.’ I said: ‘Did Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, not follow Ibrahim, peace be upon him?’ He said: ‘He followed his creed.’ I said: ‘What was his creed?’ He said: ‘Being true in faith. Have you not seen the words of Allah Almighty: “Follow the creed of Ibrahim, the (one) true in faith, and he was not one of the polytheists”?!’”

This is clear evidence that Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, is the best of the Prophets. Undoubtedly, his nation is also the best of nations, contrary to what hypocrites claim; because his nation knows and acts upon aspects of religion that other nations do not know or act upon, and clearly, knowing and acting upon religion form the foundation of virtue in the sight of Allah Almighty; as He has said: ﴿يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ[29]; “Allah will raise in rank those of you who believed and those who were given knowledge,” and said: ﴿إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ[30]; “Indeed, the most honorable among you with Allah is the most pious among you.” Therefore, He has said to his nation: ﴿وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِتَكُونُوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدًا[31]; “And thus we made you a middle nation so that you would be witnesses over people and the Messenger would be a witness over you”; considering that the intended meaning of the term “middle” is “the best”; as realized by His words: ﴿لِتَكُونُوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ; “so that you would be witnesses over people,” and supported by His words: ﴿قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ[32]; “The most middle of them said: Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not glorify (Allah)?’” meaning the best of them, as well as His words: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى[33]; “Preserve the prayers and the middle prayer,” since it indicates the superiority of the middle prayer. Rather, He has explicitly stated it in His words: ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَئِكَ هُمْ خَيْرُ الْبَرِيَّةِ[34]; “Indeed, those who believed and deed righteous deeds, they are the best of creatures,” after saying: ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ أُولَئِكَ هُمْ شَرُّ الْبَرِيَّةِ[35]; “Indeed, those who disbelieve among the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.” Undoubtedly, this is a decisive text indicating that Muslims are the best of Allah’s creation and the Jews, Christians, and polytheists are the worst of Allah’s creation, as is the statement of Allah Almighty addressing Muslims: ﴿كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ ۗ وَلَوْ آمَنَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ ۚ مِنْهُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ[36]; “You are the best nation that has ever been brought forth for people. You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah, and if the people of the Book had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are sinners.” As for what hypocrites bring as proof from the words of Allah Almighty: ﴿يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ اذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتِيَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَأَنِّي فَضَّلْتُكُمْ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ[37]; “O Children of Israel! Remember My blessing that I bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the people of the world,” there is no proof for them in it; because Allah’s statement: ﴿فَضَّلْتُكُمْ; “I preferred you” is in the past tense, indicating their preference only in the past and not its continuation after the emergence of Islam; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

! ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْقُرْآنِيَّةَ يَنْتَمُونَ إِلَى الْقُرْآنِ وَهُوَ بَرِيءٌ مِنْهُمْ، إِنَّ الْقُرْآنِيَّةَ هُمُ الضَّالُّونَ»; “I said to Mansoor: ‘Quranists claim that the nation of Musa, peace be upon him, is the best of the nations; because Allah Almighty has said to them: “I preferred you over the people of the world!”’ So he said: ‘They lied, may Allah curse them! That was only before Isa, peace be upon him, came to them. So when Isa, peace be upon him, came to them, those who followed him were better than those who followed Musa, peace be upon him, until Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, came to them. So when Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, came to them, those who followed him were better than those who followed Isa, peace be upon him. So the nation of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, is better than both of those nations.’ I said: ‘They claim that there is nothing in the Quran indicating that they are better!’ So he said: ‘They lied, may Allah curse them! Is the statement of Allah Almighty not in the Quran, where He has said: “You are the best nation that has ever been brought forth for people,” and said: “Indeed, those who believed and deed righteous deeds, they are the best of creatures”?!’ Then he said: ‘Indeed, Quranists belong to the Quran while it disavows them. Indeed, Quranists are the misguided ones.’”
