Question & Answer

We have seen and heard many times that non-Muslims, even atheists, Buddhists, or cow-worshippers, have got their diseases healed and their needs met by visiting their temples and holy places. Please explain to us, how is it done?

The healing of people is only from God, and He is the One Who meets their needs, whether they know it or are heedless of it; as He has said, referring to Muslims and disbelievers: ﴿كُلًّا نُمِدُّ هَؤُلَاءِ وَهَؤُلَاءِ مِنْ عَطَاءِ رَبِّكَ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ عَطَاءُ رَبِّكَ مَحْظُورًا[1]; “Upon all, both these (who desire the world) and those (who desire the Hereafter), We bestow the bounty of your Lord, and the bounty of your Lord is not restricted,” and said: ﴿مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ حَرْثَ الْآخِرَةِ نَزِدْ لَهُ فِي حَرْثِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ حَرْثَ الدُّنْيَا نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا وَمَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ نَصِيبٍ[2]; “Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter, We will increase for him his harvest, and whoever desires the harvest of the world, We will grant him a share of it, but He will have no share in the Hereafter,” and this is done for two reasons:

Firstly, God’s provision of sustenance and His mercy; as He has said: ﴿وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى اللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا[3]; “And there is no living creature on the earth but its sustenance is on God,” and said: ﴿وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ[4]; “And My mercy encompasses all things.” Therefore, He does not cut off the sustenance of His deniers because of their denial, nor does He ignore the needs of His enemies because of their enmity; because if they do not know Him, He knows them, and if they do not care about Him, He cares about them, and this is the demonstration of His mercy and the manifestation of His name «أرحم الراحمين»; “the Most Merciful of the merciful”; as one of our companions informed us, he said:

! أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْغَافِلُونَ»; “I was in a mosque with Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, then he heard a man pray to God Almighty and say: ‘O He Who grants to one who does not ask Him and to one who does not know Him, out of affection and mercy.’ So he started crying and then said: ‘Such is God, our Lord; He grants to one who does not ask Him, to one who does not know Him, and to one who asks from other than Him; he goes to a tree and asks from it, then God Almighty grants to him, then he returns while saying: “The tree granted to me,” and how can the tree grants to him?! They are indeed the heedless.’”

Secondly, God’s plan and trial, and this is because when God Almighty knows that a servant turns away from the truth and desires falsehood and then He wills to lead him astray, He makes his evil deeds fair-seeming to him and sets something that covers his religion for him and increases his misguidance, and what indicates that is His words, where He has said: ﴿فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا[5]; “In their hearts is a sickness, so God increased them in sickness,” and said: ﴿اللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ[6]; “God mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression (to) wander blindly,” and said: ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ زَيَّنَّا لَهُمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ فَهُمْ يَعْمَهُونَ[7]; “Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds fair-seeming to them, so they wander blindly,” and said: ﴿وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفْئِدَتَهُمْ وَأَبْصَارَهُمْ كَمَا لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِهِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَنَذَرُهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ[8]; “And We turn their hearts and eyes away, just as they did not believe in it at the first time, and We will leave them wandering blindly in their rebellion,” and said: ﴿كَذَلِكَ زَيَّنَّا لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ عَمَلَهُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ مَرْجِعُهُمْ فَيُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ[9]; “This is how We have made the deeds of every nation fair-seeming to them. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do,” and said: ﴿وَيُضِلُّ اللَّهُ الظَّالِمِينَ[10]; “And God leads oppressors astray,” and said: ﴿وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَالًا[11]; “And (my Lord,) do not increase oppressors except in misguidance,” and said: ﴿مَنْ يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ ۚ وَيَذَرُهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ[12]; “Whoever God leads astray, then there is no guide for him, and He leaves them in their transgressions (to) wander blindly,” and said: ﴿وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ اللَّهُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِينَ[13]; “They plan, and God plans, and God is the Best Planner,” and other verses, and this is what one of our companions informed us about, he said:

إِيَّاكَ وَجِدَالَ كُلِّ مَفْتُونٍ، فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَفْتُونٍ مُلَقَّنٌ حُجَّتَهُ إِلَى انْقِضَاءِ مُدَّتِهِ، فَإِذَا انْقَضَتْ مُدَّتُهُ خَرَّتْ عَلَيْهِ فِتْنَتُهُ فَأَهْلَكَتْهُ»; “I said to Mansoor: ‘Do you know anyone more unjust and more rebellious than so-and-so at this time? That is, a man from the leaders of misguidance.’ So he said: ‘No.’ I said: ‘I swear to God, there is always a human who claims to have seen dreams and wonders that confirm him!’ So he said: ‘O Hasan! It is one of the plans and trials of God. If God sees a tendency toward falsehood in a servant after the truth was made clear to him, He leads him astray from where he seeks guidance. “This is how God leads astray whoever is extravagant and doubtful!”’ Then he paused for a moment and then said: ‘O Hasan! Avoid arguing with whoever has fallen into fitnah; because whoever has fallen into fitnah, his proof is instilled into him until his time is up, then, when his time is up, his fitnah will collapse on him and destroy him.’”
