as God Almighty has said: ﴿وَمَا هَٰذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ ۚ وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ[1]; “And the life of the world is nothing but diversion and play, and surely the abode of the Hereafter is indeed the life, if they only knew,” and said: ﴿يَا قَوْمِ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا مَتَاعٌ وَإِنَّ الْآخِرَةَ هِيَ دَارُ الْقَرَارِ[2]; “O people! In fact, the life of the world is only an enjoyment, and the Hereafter is the permanent abode.” Of course, loving things that are necessary for the life of the world is natural and not considered bad, but loving them more than things that are necessary for the life of the Hereafter is not natural and is considered bad; because the intellect prefers the eternal life to the temporary life and prioritizes more reward or punishment over less reward or punishment. Based on this, it is not bad to love the life of the world, but it is bad to prioritize it over the life of the Hereafter, and this is the worldliness which is considered one the impediments to cognition; as God Almighty has said: ﴿بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا ۝ وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى[3]; “Rather, you prefer the life of the world; while the Hereafter is better and more lasting,” and said: ﴿كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ ۝ وَتَذَرُونَ الْآخِرَةَ[4]; “Never! Rather, you love the world and abandon the Hereafter,” and said: ﴿إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ يُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَاءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا[5]; “Indeed, these people love the world and leave behind a grievous Day,” and said: ﴿أَرَضِيتُمْ بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ ۚ فَمَا مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ[6]; “Do you prefer the life of the world to the Hereafter?! While the life of the world is but little compared to the Hereafter.”

[The origin of worldliness]

It is clear that the origin of worldliness is the lack of belief in the Hereafter; because the human being is not able to sacrifice what he is certain of for what he is not certain of, and therefore, worldliness is mostly seen among those who deny the life of the Hereafter and believe that the human being will cease to exist with death.
