and that a group of them ﴿جَاءُوا بِالْإِفْكِ; “came forward with the slander” against some of the wives of the Prophet, and He has declared that ﴿لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ مَا اكْتَسَبَ مِنَ الْإِثْمِ ۚ وَالَّذِي تَوَلَّى كِبْرَهُ مِنْهُمْ لَهُ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ[1]; “every one of them shall bear the sin that he has earned, and he who has taken the greatest part in it will have a painful punishment,” and He has declared that some of them did not use the intellect[2] and that there were sinners among them[3], and He has condemned some others who were his wives for disobeying him and disclosing his secret[4] and perhaps even for conspiracy against him[5], and He has likened them to the wives of Nuh and Lut [6] and considered their punishment doubled if they committed a manifest vile deed[7]. It is clear that knowing the Sahabah of the Messenger of God without paying attention to this part of God’s words about them and only with paying attention to the other part that is in their praise is imperfect and misleading; as God Almighty has said: ﴿أَفَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِبَعْضِ الْكِتَابِ وَتَكْفُرُونَ بِبَعْضٍ ۚ فَمَا جَزَاءُ مَنْ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا خِزْيٌ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَى أَشَدِّ الْعَذَابِ[8]; “Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in another part?! What is the punishment for one among you who does so other than humiliation in the life of the world, and that they will be returned to the severest punishment on the Day of Judgment?!”

↑[1] . An-Nur/ 11
(Al-Hujurat/ 4); “Undoubtedly, those who call you from behind the rooms, most of them do not use the intellect.”
(Al-Hujurat/ 6); “O you who believed! If a sinner brings you any news, ascertain its truthfulness lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then regret what you did.”
(At-Tahrim/ 3); “And when the Prophet confided a secret to one of his wives, so when she disclosed it, and God informed him about it, he made known to her a part of it and avoided mentioning the rest. So when he told her about it, she said: ‘Who informed you about this?!’ He said: ‘I was informed by the All-Knowing, the Aware.’”
(At-Tahrim/ 4); “And if you conspire against him, then God, Jibreel, and the righteous believers will protect him, and the Angels will support him after that.”
(At-Tahrim/ 10); “God sets forth as an example for those who disbelieve the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut, who were under two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed them, and their husbands were of no benefit to them against God, and it was said to them: ‘Enter Hell with those who enter.’”
(Al-Ahzab/ 30); “O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits a manifest vile deed, the punishment will be doubled for her, and it will be easy for God.”
↑[8] . Al-Baqarah/ 85
