as Sharia, in order to be able to prove the authority of the intellect, its own authority must first be proved; because its authority is not clearer than the authority of the intellect, while there is no means to prove its authority other than the intellect, and proving its authority by itself is also meaningless. Yes, the intellect proves the authority of Sharia, and then, when it is considered the criterion of cognition, it naturally includes Sharia, and therefore, it is not necessary to mention Sharia alongside it as the criterion of cognition, for it is only mentioning the special alongside the general or the obligatory alongside the obligated for emphasis; as God Almighty has said: ﴿أَمْ تَحْسَبُ أَنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ أَوْ يَعْقِلُونَ ۚ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا كَالْأَنْعَامِ ۖ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا[1]; “Or do you think that most of them will listen or use the intellect?! They are but like cattle, they are even more astray,” and said: ﴿وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ[2]; “They say: ‘If we had listened or used the intellect, we would have not been among the companions of fire,’” and said: ﴿أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَتَكُونَ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَا أَوْ آذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا ۖ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَعْمَى الْأَبْصَارُ وَلَكِنْ تَعْمَى الْقُلُوبُ الَّتِي فِي الصُّدُورِ[3]; “Did they not travel around the earth so that they have hearts with which they understand or ears with which they listen?! So undoubtedly the eyes are not blind, but the hearts in the chests are blind,” considering that listening is acting on Sharia and concomitant with using the intellect, but rather it is not possible without using the intellect, which is called “heart” in the Book of God.

Therefore, it can be said that those who doubt the authority of the intellect or deny it in fact do nothing but prove it; because doubting the authority of the intellect or denying it is not possible without the authority of the intellect, and denying it requires proving it!

Deniers of the authority of the intellect

The authority of the intellect and its being the criterion of cognition are from the essential issues, doubting which is meaningless. However, there have been people who have doubted and even denied them for a long time.
