[Second; imitating scholars]

Another common type of imitation is following the sayings and actions of scholars; because most Muslims consider the sayings and actions of scholars as Sharia and do not know any difference between them, whereas Sharia is certainly not the sayings and actions of scholars, but rather it is the sayings and actions of God Almighty, and there is no correlation between them, and their compatibility with each other is not certain; as incompatibility of many sayings and actions of scholars with Sharia is evident, to the extent that God Almighty has said about them: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْأَحْبَارِ وَالرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ النَّاسِ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۗ[1]; “O you who believed! Many scholars and monks surely devour people’s belongings falsely and stop (them) from the way of God.” Moreover, their disagreements with each other about their sayings and action are deep and numerous; whereas the truth is surely a unitary saying and action and cannot become plural or multiplied. Therefore, following them, on the one hand, is contradictory and meaningless, and on the other hand, it leads to disagreement among Muslims; as it has already led to it; because the disagreement among Muslims about their beliefs and deeds, more than anything else, is due to their following different scholars; considering that in their beliefs they follow scholars such as al-Ash‘ari (d. 324 AH) and ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH), and in their deeds they follow scholars such as Abu Hanifa (d. 150 AH), Malik (d. 179 AH), al-Shafi‘i (d. 204 AH), and ibn Hanbal (d. 241 AH); while following them is based on their followers’ conjecture about the compatibility of their sayings and actions with Sharia, which is certainly not sufficient for following them; because having knowledge about the compatibility of something with Sharia is necessary to believe in it or practice it, and conjecture cannot be the basis of Muslims’ beliefs and deeds; as God Almighty has said: ﴿وَمَا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا[2]; “They have no knowledge about it; they follow nothing but conjecture, while conjecture is not sufficient for (proving) the truth.”
