as God Almighty has said about them: ﴿وَكَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ مَا عَرَفُوا كَفَرُوا بِهِ ۚ فَلَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ[1]; “And before that they used to ask for victory over those who disbelieved, but when what they knew came to them, they disbelieved in it; so God’s curse is on disbelievers,” or they expected that every Prophet would bring them a sacrifice that would be consumed by fire, and when the Prophet did not bring it, they denied him; as God Almighty has said: ﴿الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَا أَلَّا نُؤْمِنَ لِرَسُولٍ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَنَا بِقُرْبَانٍ تَأْكُلُهُ النَّارُ[2]; “Those who said: ‘God has made a covenant with us to not believe in a Prophet unless he brings us a sacrifice to be consumed by fire!’”; while their expectations were not based on the intellect, but originated from their wishes; as God Almighty has said: ﴿تِلْكَ أَمَانِيُّهُمْ ۗ قُلْ هَاتُوا بُرْهَانَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ[3]; “That is their wishes; say: ‘Bring your proof if you are truthful!’” Thus, the preconceptions arising from passions determine conditions for knowing the truth that in fact knowing the truth is not conditional on them. In addition, by arousing prejudgments, they foreclose the opportunity to know the truth and do not give the intellect any chance to examine it; like a judge who rejects the claim of a plaintiff before listening to his reasons because he does not like him to be truthful or, based on his preconceptions, he cannot be truthful or accepts his claim before listening to his reasons because he likes him to be truthful or, based on his preconceptions, he cannot be a liar. As many Muslims like some people and, accordingly, believe that everything they say or do is right, and they dislike some people and, accordingly, believe that everything they say or do is wrong; while God Almighty has said: ﴿وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا ۚ اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى[4]; “And do not let hatred of some people force you to not act justly; act justly, that is nearer to piety.” It is clear that this prejudgment is one of the greatest impediments to cognition and the most important means of denying the truth;
