because following the statements and actions of some of them means not following the statements and actions of some others, which is a contradictory and meaningless act; regardless of the fact that this selective following of them is not permissible without a rational or religious preference, and it leads to discord among later generations. However, with a rational or religious preference, it is not considered following them; rather, it is, in fact, following the intellect or Sharia. Therefore, it appears that recently, Salafists have also realized the incorrectness of their approach, and they are moving away from it and reconstructing the principles of Salafism; because they no longer emphasize the necessity of following the Sahabah, the Tabi‘un, and the followers of the Tabi‘un as they did in the past. Instead, they insist on the necessity of referring to the Quran and the Sunnah, regardless of the statements and actions of the Sahabah, the Tabi‘un, and the followers of the Tabi‘un. However, the reality is that they will not be able to do this; because following the Sahabah, the Tabi‘un, and the followers of the Tabi‘un, even if done selectively, is no longer an optional act, but rather one that is done willingly or unwillingly; because what they consider as their criterion for knowing Islam under the name of the Sunnah mostly consists of conjectural narrations, which have been transmitted through the Sahabah, the Tabi‘un, the followers of the Tabi‘un, and those who came after them, and these narrations have been influenced by their political and sectarian groupings and the events of the early centuries, and consequently lack the necessary authenticity and purity. Therefore, it seems too late to return to the Quran and the Sunnah, and Salafists, in the current structure, have no choice but to follow the predecessors, unless they break the current structure, which is based on conjectures, and replace it with another structure that is based on certainties. This is the path to returning to Islam; because Islam is based on certainty, and anything that does not lead to certainty has no place in Islam, and this serves as a universal rule that cannot be specified.
