Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani
New question: I have been working for many years in the governmental system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Considering the disregard for justice and the blatant acts of oppression committed against the rights of people in these institutions, is there any justification for continuing to work in this system? I myself discussed this with one of their scholars and explained to him that the Earth’s sphericity and its orbit around the sun are among widely transmitted matters, but even among perceptible matters, and doubting them is sophistry. However, he told me that even if he saw the Earth’s sphericity and its orbit with his own eyes, he would not believe it; because, according to his supposition, it contradicts the narrations! This approach, which resembles the Church’s approach in the Middle Ages, demonstrates the extent of this group’s anti-rationalism, while anti-rationalism leads to opposition against Allah; because the intellect is a creation of Allah and the only instrument that He has placed within the human being for understanding, and therefore, opposing it means opposing His will and action[1]! Those who consider the intellect to be a rival of Sharia are oblivious to the great reality that the intellect and Sharia have originated from one source and both are creations of Allah the One! Is there any inconsistency in the creation of Allah the One, and do some of His creations contradict others?! Clearly not; because the actions of Allah are based on wisdom, and none of them contradicts another; as He has said: ﴿مَا تَرَى فِي خَلْقِ الرَّحْمَنِ مِنْ تَفَاوُتٍ[2]; “You do not see any discrepancy in the creation of Allah.” In other words, the One Who has sent Sharia is the same One Who has created the intellect, and therefore, the contradiction between the intellect and Sharia is impossible. Those who consider the intellect and Sharia to be in conflict have unknowingly turned to polytheism, thinking that the Creator of the intellect is not the Creator of Sharia! The belief in the contradiction between the intellect and Sharia is a polytheistic belief that has emerged in opposition to monotheistic belief; because the existence of duality in the universe and the opposition of creation to legislation are only acceptable on the basis of atheism! There is no doubt that Sharia is in agreement with the intellect and clearly affirms it; rather, it calls to it and warns those who abandon it. For example, it states: ﴿إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ[3]; “We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may use the intellect,” and: ﴿كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ[4]; “This is how Allah explains His signs to you so that you may use the intellect,”

A similar statement has also been narrated from ibn al-Qass (d. 335 AH) (see al-Faqih Wa al-Mutafaqqih by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, vol. 2, p. 37).
