and also in the middle of the day, which is the Dhuhr prayer; and before the middle of the night, which is the Isha prayer—as He has said: ﴿أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا[1]; “And perform prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night, and the recitation of Fajr; for the recitation of Fajr is witnessed.” Therefore, guarding them at their times is obligatory; as He has said: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ[2]; “Guard the prayers and the middle prayer, and rise in devotion for Allah.” Guarding them means being consistent in them and showing humility in them; as Allah has said: ﴿الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ[3]; “Those who are consistent in their prayer,” and: ﴿الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ[4]; “Those who show humility in their prayer.” It also means avoiding laziness, ostentation, heedlessness, and oversight in them; as He has said: ﴿إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَهُوَ خَادِعُهُمْ وَإِذَا قَامُوا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ قَامُوا كُسَالَى يُرَاءُونَ النَّاسَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا[5]; “Indeed, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He is the One who deceives them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing off to the people, and they do not remember Allah except a little,” and: ﴿الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ[6]; “Those who are heedless of their prayers.” Prayer is fundamentally based on bowing and prostration; as Allah has commanded them, saying: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ارْكَعُوا وَاسْجُدُوا وَاعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمْ[7]; “O you who believed! Bow and prostrate, and worship your Lord.” Yet the recitation of the Quran in it is also obligatory to the extent that it is easy; as Allah has commanded it, saying: ﴿فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۚ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ[8]; “So recite from it whatever is easy, and perform prayer.” It is also obligatory, when possible, to perform it in congregation; as Allah has commanded it, saying: ﴿وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ[9]; “And bow with those who bow.”
