because His statement, in its general sense, still includes the Prophet’s relatives. Therefore, the priority of the children of Fatimah over other Muslims and other relatives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) is established in all matters where priority is a factor, such as the caliphate. Accordingly, each of them who is considered the greatest among them in his time is more worthy of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) and his tasks than the others; for example, Hasan after Ali ibn Abi Talib, Husain after Hasan, Ali ibn Husain (d. 94 AH) after Husain, Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn Ali, known as al-Baqir (d. 114 AH) after Ali ibn Husain, and Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, known as al-Sadiq (d. 148 AH) after Abu Ja‘far—each of whom was recognized as the leading member of the Ahl al-Bayt in his time.

[Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husain: The Intended Meaning of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet]

Yes, the intended meaning of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) fundamentally refers to Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husain. This follows from their closest relationship to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) compared to others, their residence in his house, and the widely transmitted reports narrated by many of his companions—such as Abdullah ibn Abbas[1], Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri[2], Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas[3], Anas ibn Malik[4],
