Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani
New question: I have been working for many years in the governmental system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Considering the disregard for justice and the blatant acts of oppression committed against the rights of people in these institutions, is there any justification for continuing to work in this system? Based on this, those who dislike the station of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) in Islam dislike what Allah has revealed, and Allah will rub their noses in the dust; as He has said: ﴿ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوا مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ[1]; “That was because they disliked what Allah had revealed, so He made their deeds come to nothing.” Likewise, acknowledging their station in Islam does not mean entering any of the madhhabs of Muslims; rather, it is only a return to the pure and perfect Islam, to the extent that one who acknowledges it is worthy of no title other than “Muslim,” and assigning any other title to him is an act of oppression, lying, and transgression[2].

[The Intended Meaning of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet is Some of Them, Not All of Them]

Yes, it is understood from the foregoing that the intended meaning of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), in the context where they are regarded as his caliphs appointed by Allah, cannot be the entire Quraysh; because among Quraysh were oppressive and tyrannical individuals who were not pure from any form of rijs, and whose separation from the Book of Allah was evident, such as the Banu Umayyah. Similarly, the intended meaning of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) in that context cannot be the entire Banu Hashim; because among the Banu Hashim were individuals whose lack of purity from any form of rijs and whose separation from the Book of Allah were evident, such as the Banu Abbas, who were mostly corrupt and bloodthirsty rulers. Rather, among the Banu Hashim were individuals who were not Muslims, and the Quran was revealed condemning them, such as Abu Lahab. Likewise, the intended meaning of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), in the context where they are regarded as his caliphs appointed by Allah, cannot be all of his wives; because among his wives were those who disobeyed him—as Allah has informed in Surah al-Tahrim—to the extent that Allah presented the wives of Nuh and Lut (peace be upon them) as an example for them, whereas He said to Nuh (peace be upon him) regarding some of his family who disobeyed him: ﴿يَا نُوحُ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ ۖ إِنَّهُ عَمَلٌ غَيْرُ صَالِحٍ[3]; “O Nuh! He is not of your family; he has an unrighteous deed.”

↑[2] . By “any other title,” he means terms such as “polytheist,” “rafidi,” and the like. This is because ignorant people have called him such because of this view of his; as one of his companions informed us, saying: “I said to Mansoor: ‘They say you are a polytheist!’ He said: ‘Glory be to Allah! What is my polytheism?’ I said: ‘Your saying that sovereignty is in the hands of Allah, and not in the hands of people!’ So he laughed in astonishment at their words and said: ‘Is one who considers authority to be for Allah alone a polytheist, and one who considers it to be for other than Him a monotheist?! ﴿سَاءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ [“How evil they judge” (Al-An‘am/ 136)].’ I said: ‘They say that you are a rafidi!’ He said: ‘Glory be to Allah! What is my rafd?’ I said: ‘Your giving precedence to the Ahl al-Bayt (over others)!’ So he laughed in astonishment at their words and said: ‘This is not rafd. Rafd is only to declare the two shaikhs (i.e., Abu Bakr and Umar) as disbelievers or to revile them!’ At that moment, a man from our companions entered the room holding a vessel in his hand and placed it upside down. Then Mansoor pointed to him and said: ‘If Allah has overturned their intellects just as he has overturned his vessel, what is my fault?!’” One of his companions also informed us, saying: “A man asked Mansoor about his view on the caliphate, and he said: ‘We say that the Ahl al-Bayt were more deserving of it and were qualified for it.’ The man then said: ‘In that case, what is the difference between you and the rafidah?’ He said: ‘The difference between us and them is that they speak ill of the Sahabah, but we speak only good of them.’” One of his companions also informed us, saying: “I heard Mansoor say: ‘How astonishing are those who consider anyone who says that the Ahl al-Bayt are the most deserving to be a rafidi! Do they not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) brought Ali and Fatimah close and seated them in front of him, and seated Hasan and Husain on his thighs, then drew his cloak over them and recited the statement of Allah: ﴿إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا [“Indeed, Allah wants to remove any impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and make you completely pure” (Al-Ahzab/ 33]), then he said: «اللَّهُمَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي، وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِي أَحَقُّ» [“O Allah! These are my Ahl al-Bayt, and my Ahl al-Bayt are the most deserving”]?!’” One of his companions also informed us, saying: “I said to Mansoor: ‘They consider you a rafidi because you mention the Ahl al-Bayt so much.’ So he said: ‘Leave those fools who are like madmen! Did they not consider al-Shafi‘i a rafidi, until he said: “Stand at al-Muhassab in Mina and cry out… and to everyone seated or standing at al-Khayf… that if loving the family of Muhammad is rafd… then let the jinn and humankind bear witness that I am a rafidi”!?’” One of his companions also informed us, saying: “I said to Mansoor: ‘By Allah, you did not say anything except with the Quran and the Sunnah, but that is rafd in their view!’ So he said: ‘I do not care what it is in their view after I said it with the Quran and the Sunnah! So they may call it rafd if they want, and they may call it disbelief if they want; because it is faith!’” (For his statements on this matter, refer to: The official website of his office → Sayings → Saying 208).
