Therefore, the foundation that Islam has designed and established for the beliefs and deeds of Muslims is following the Book of Allah as a rope from Allah, and following the family of the Prophet as a rope from people—both of which lead to certainty; as Allah Almighty has said: ﴿ضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ أَيْنَ مَا ثُقِفُوا إِلَّا بِحَبْلٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَحَبْلٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَبَاءُوا بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَسْكَنَةُ[1]; “They were struck by ignominy wherever they are found, except with a rope from Allah and a rope from people, and they incurred wrath from Allah and were struck by wretchedness.” Yes, without any doubt, this has been the foundation of Islam—not following the Quran alongside Hadith that does not lead to certainty; because the authority of the Quran and the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) is not based on a solitary report, but rather on a mutawatir report, narrated by a large number of people at each level. Such a report—unlike a solitary one—leads to certainty. From here, it is understood that Hadith has always been a substitute for the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) to compensate for Muslims’ failure to refer to them. This is because the incorrectness of the opinion held by a group of the Sahabah, who considered the Book of Allah sufficient after him, quickly became clear to Muslims. However, the correctness of the opinion held by another group of the Sahabah, who deemed the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) essential alongside the Book of Allah, has not yet become clear to them; because the impediments to knowing, particularly the propaganda of oppressive rulers and the imitation of predecessors, have not allowed it to become clear to them. Therefore, they have established a third opinion and turned to Hadith to fulfill their needs by relying on it alongside the Book of Allah. However, Hadith—as an uncertain report—has no affinity with the Book of Allah and cannot be placed on the same level with it; because the Book of Allah is certain, and the uncertain cannot stand alongside the certain. It is only the caliph of Allah from the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet who is qualified to be placed alongside the Quran—due to his purity from all impurity, according to the Quran, and his inseparability from the Quran until the Day of Judgment, according to the mutawatir Hadith. It is clear that directly referring to him is possible and, like directly referring to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), leads to certainty about Islamic beliefs and deeds.
