because Allah has repeatedly accused the People of the Book of concealing the truth and covering it with falsehood[1], spoken of their fabricating lies against Him and their tampering with the Book[2], and warned against befriending them and following their religion[3]. Therefore, it is impossible that He would have commanded seeking knowledge from them. Rather, perhaps what He means by “remembrance” in this verse is His Prophet, just as He has explicitly called him “remembrance,” saying: ﴿قَدْ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكُمْ ذِكْرًا ۝ رَسُولًا يَتْلُو عَلَيْكُمْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ مُبَيِّنَاتٍ[4]; “Allah has sent to you a remembrance: a Messenger who recites to you the illustrative verses of Allah.” Based on this, the “people of remembrance” are none other than the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), whose complete purity Allah has explicitly declared. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) also emphatically insisted on the necessity of holding firmly to them alongside the Quran. This is the preferred view reported from Ali ibn Abi Talib[5] and Abu Ja‘far al-Baqir[6]. Yet, it appears that those raised in the Umayyad school prefer following Jews and Christians over following the Ahl al-Bayt of their Prophet, fleeing toward disbelief out of fear of Shiism! However, it is clear that following the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) is based on definitive statements from the Quran and the Sunnah. Therefore, Shiism is not viewed in the sense of a sect; rather, like performing prayer and paying Zakat, it is one of the requirements of the original and perfect Islam.

↑[1] . As Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِنْهُمْ لَيَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ (Al-Baqarah/ 146); “And a group of them surely conceal the truth while they know it.”
↑[2] . As Allah Almighty has said: ﴿فَوَيْلٌ لِلَّذِينَ يَكْتُبُونَ الْكِتَابَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ هَذَا مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا ۖ فَوَيْلٌ لَهُمْ مِمَّا كَتَبَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَوَيْلٌ لَهُمْ مِمَّا يَكْسِبُونَ (Al-Baqarah/ 79); “So woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ in order to sell it for a small price. So woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.”
↑[3] . As Allah Almighty has said: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى أَوْلِيَاءَ ۘ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ وَمَنْ يَتَوَلَّهُمْ مِنْكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ (Al-Ma’idah/ 51); “O you who believed! Do not take the Jews and Christians as friends! Some of them are friends with some others. And whoever of you takes them as friends is one of them! Indeed, Allah does not guide the group of oppressors.”
