either Allah teaches the entirety of Islam directly to all Muslims, or He chooses some of them for this task so that others may acquire knowledge of the entirety of Islam from them indirectly. Since it is certain that Allah has not taught the entirety of Islam directly to all Muslims, it becomes clear that He has taught it to some of them. Accordingly, it is obligatory for others to know these individuals and acquire knowledge from them. Given that the knowledge of the entirety of Islam belongs exclusively to Allah, these individuals are inevitably either Prophets, who have received the knowledge of the entirety of Islam directly from Allah, or connected to the Prophets, who have received the knowledge of the entirety of Islam from Allah through the Prophets. Similarly, by virtue of their acting as Allah’s representatives in teaching the entirety of Islam, such individuals are considered Allah’s caliphs among Muslims. From here, it is understood that Allah has appointed a caliph on the Earth; as He has mentioned it as His way, saying: ﴿إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً[1]; “I am the Appointer of a caliph on the Earth.” Clearly, this caliph, whenever knowledgeable about the entirety of Islam and obligated to teach it, can teach the entirety of it to Muslims and make it practicable for them, in which case it is clearly obligatory for them to acquire knowledge from him. From this principle, it follows that the Earth must never be without such a caliph; because its being without him, even for a short time, necessitates the impossibility of knowing and, accordingly, practicing the entirety of Islam during that time, and since this impossibility is attributed to Allah and causes harm to Muslims, it is impossible, and Allah is far above it. Yes, if such a caliph has been appointed among Muslims, but they do not know him or enable him to teach due to their own negligence, then they will have no proof against Allah. In this case, their state of helplessness will be possible; because a state of helplessness is possible when it results from the actions of Muslims rather than from the actions of Allah, in such a way that practicing a part of Islam becomes impossible due to their negligence in acquiring its prerequisites, and practicing the other parts of Islam without practicing that part becomes inadequate. However, considering the possibility of Muslims abandoning the negligence, this situation can be remedied;
