Hadith No. 1

“The Ummah is never devoid of a guiding Imam.”

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi [d. 279 AH] has narrated in his Sunan, (in this way that) he said: Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Asma’ al-Rahabi, from Thawban that he said:

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: “I fear for my Ummah from the misguiding imams,” and said: “A number of my Ummah will always be steadfast upon the truth, and one who does not help them will not harm them until the decree of God comes.”

Translation:

Also, Aslam ibn Sahl al-Razzaz [d. 292 AH] has narrated in Tarikh Wasit and said: Muhammad ibn Mahan narrated to us, he said: My father informed me, he said: Sulayman ibn Khalid narrated to us from Qatadah, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Asma’, from Thawban that he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: I fear for my Ummah from the misguiding imams more than anything else, and a number of my Ummah will always be steadfast upon the truth, and one who opposes them will not harm them until the decree of God comes.

Translation:

Mansoor, May God protect him, said: This is a mutawatir Hadith from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family; because twenty people have narrated it from him, and they are Thawban, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Imran ibn Husain, Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas, Umar ibn Al-Khattab, Uqba ibn Amir, Anas ibn Malik, Abdullah ibn Umar, Jabir ibn Samurah, Zayd ibn Arqam, Mughirah ibn Shu‘ba, Nu‘man ibn Bashir, Abu Hurairah, Abu Umama, Abu Darda’, Mu‘awiya, Qurrat ibn Iyas al-Muzni, Shurahbil ibn al-Simt al-Kindi, Ka‘b ibn Murra al-Bahzi, and Salama ibn Nufayr al-Hadrami, and those who do not understand have said that the intended meaning of a number who will always be steadfast upon the truth is the people of the Levant, and some of them have also included this in the Hadith, and I do not know when the people of the Levant have been upon the truth?! Was it when they rebelled against Ali and made his companions fall into error, or when they killed Husain and put his head on display in the cities, or when they invaded Medina and slaughtered the Muhajirin and the Ansar[6]?! It is no so, but rather they have always been upon falsehood, and also in the end time they will be the helpers of Sufyani, and every narration in their virtue is fabricated and has no basis, and the followers of Banu Umayya have made it up in the time of Mu‘awiya, Marwan, and their family; because it is a lie, and the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, would not lie, and some of the people of Hadith have said that the intended meaning of a number who will always be steadfast upon the truth are people of Hadith, “each group rejoices in what they have,” and it has been said that the intended meaning of them is people of the West; because of the narration of Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, in which it has been said: “People of the West[7] will always be steadfast upon the true path until the Day of Judgment arrives,” and maybe that is mispronunciation; because it has been said in some versions: “The Arabs[8] will always be steadfast upon the true path until the Day of Judgment arrives,” which means a number of the Arabs, and it has been said that the intended meaning of the West is a large bucket made of cow skin, which is a piece of Arab furniture, and it has been said that its intended meaning is people of resistance and war, and the West of a thing is its sharp edge, and what is correct is that a number who will always be steadfast upon the truth are the Imams of guidance. Do you not see that he has mentioned them after warning against the misguiding imams? And this indicates that the Ummah will never be empty of a guiding Imam until the Day of Judgment arrives.
