Hadith No. 14

The Earth never remains without an Imam.

رَوَى عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَابَوَيْهِ [ت329ه‍] فِي «الْإِمَامَةِ وَالتَّبْصِرَةِ»[1]، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ، عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَلَا، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ -يَعْنِي جَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّادِقَ- عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، قَالَ:

قُلْتُ لَهُ: تَبْقَى الْأَرْضُ يَوْمًا بِغَيْرِ إِمَامٍ؟ فَقَالَ: «لَا».

Translation:

Ali ibn Babawayh [d. 329 AH] has narrated in the book al-Imamah Wa al-Tabsirah, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Ubaid, from Muhammad ibn Abi Umair, from Husain ibn Abi al-Ala, who said:

I said to Abu Abdullah—meaning Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq—(peace be upon him): “Does the Earth remain without an Imam for a single day?” So he said: “No.”

Attestation No. 1

وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْكُلَيْنِيُّ [ت329ه‍] فِي «الْكَافِي»[2]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ: «تَبْقَى الْأَرْضُ بِغَيْرِ إِمَامٍ؟» قَالَ: «لَا».

Translation:

Also, Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub al-Kulayni [d. 329 AH] has narrated in the book al-Kafi and said: Ahmad ibn Mihran narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Ali, from Husain ibn Abi al-Ala’, who said: I said to Abu Abdullah (Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq) (peace be upon him): “Does the Earth remain without an Imam?” He said: “No.”

وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَابَوَيْهِ [ت381ه‍] فِي «كَمَالِ الدِّينِ وَتَمَامِ النِّعْمَةِ»[3]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ جَمِيعًا، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ نُوحٍ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خِدَاشٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ: سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: «تَخْلُو الْأَرْضُ سَاعَةً لَا يَكُونُ فِيهَا إِمَامٌ؟» قَالَ: «لَا تَخْلُو الْأَرْضُ مِنَ الْحَقِّ».

Translation:

Also, Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Babawayh [d. 381 AH] has narrated in the book Kamal al-Din Wa Tamam al-Ni‘mah and said: Muhammad ibn Hasan narrated to us, he said: Sa‘d ibn Abdullah and Abdullah ibn Ja‘far al-Himyari both narrated to us, from Ayyub ibn Nuh, from Safwan ibn Yahya, from Abdullah ibn Khidash al-Basri, who said: A man asked Abu Abdullah (Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq) (peace be upon him): “Does the Earth remain, even for a single hour, without an Imam on it?” He said: “The Earth does not remain without the truth.”

وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ [ت290ه‍] فِي «بَصَائِرِ الدَّرَجَاتِ»[4]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ أَجَلُّ وَأَعْظَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَتْرُكَ الْأَرْضَ بِغَيْرِ إِمَامٍ».

Translation:

Also, Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Saffar [d. 290 AH] has narrated in the book Basa’ir al-Darajat and said: Muhammad ibn Isa narrated to us, from ibn Abi Umair, from Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdullah (Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq) (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed, Allah, Exalted and Majestic, is too Honorable and Great to leave the Earth without an Imam.”

Attestation No. 4

وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْكُلَيْنِيُّ [ت329ه‍] فِي «الْكَافِي»[5]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَجَلُّ وَأَعْظَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَتْرُكَ الْأَرْضَ بِغَيْرِ إِمَامٍ عَادِلٍ».

Translation:

Also, Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub al-Kulayni [d. 329 AH] has narrated in the book al-Kafi and said: Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to me, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Husain ibn Sa‘id, from Qasim ibn Muhammad, from Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdullah (Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq) (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed, Allah is too Honorable and Great to leave the Earth without a just Imam.”

Attestation No. 5

وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَابَوَيْهِ [ت381ه‍] فِي «كَمَالِ الدِّينِ وَتَمَامِ النِّعْمَةِ»[6]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ الْمُتَوَكِّلِ قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْيَرِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَجَلُّ وَأَعْظَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَتْرُكَ الْأَرْضَ بِغَيْرِ إِمَامٍ عَدْلٍ».

Translation:

Also, Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Babawayh [d. 381 AH] has narrated in the book Kamal al-Din Wa Tamam al-Ni‘mah and said: My father and Muhammad ibn Musa ibn Mutawakkil narrated to us, they said: Abdullah ibn Ja‘far al-Himyari narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Isa, from Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdullah (Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq) (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed, Allah is too Honorable and Great to leave the Earth without an Imam of justice.”
