Translation:

Mansoor, may God protect him, said: The three chains of narrators strengthen each other and make the Hadith authentic, and it is a well-known Hadith that al-Tha‘labi [d. 427 AH], al-Daylami [d. 509 AH], al-Qurtubi [d. 671 AH], al-Suyuti [d. 911 AH], and others have mentioned, and it has gathered all the proofs of God on His servants: the Book of their Lord, the Sunnah of their Prophet, and the Imam of their time, and it mentioned the Imam of their time first because through him the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet are known as they must be, and they will be called with these three because their guidance is through these three in every time. So whoever knows all of them is one of the guided, and whoever does not know all of them is one of the misguided, and this is how people will be distinguished on the Day of Judgment; as He has said: “Whoever is guided, he is guided only to his own benefit, and whoever goes astray, he goes astray only to his own loss,” and said: “Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who is guided,” and there is no doubt that the apparent meaning of “their Imam” in the verse is one whom they obey in their time; as al-Tabari [d. 310 AH] has said after mentioning the words of interpreters: “The most correct words with us are the words of those who said: This is the meaning of the verse: ‘On the day when We will call every people with their Imam whom they obeyed and followed in the world; because the Arabs have often used the word Imam in the meaning of one who is obeyed and followed, and it is more appropriate to return the meaning of the words of God to what is more well-known as long as there is no reason against it that is necessary to accept.’”

Also, al-Ya‘qubi [d. 284 AH] has narrated in his History in the form of mursal from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, that one day he delivered a sermon and said in it: “Indeed, the servant’s steps will not be taken on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about his life, how did he spend it, about his youth, on what did he spend it, about his wealth, where did he get it and on what did he spend it, and about his Imam, who was he? God the Exalted, the Majestic has said: “On the Day when We will call every people with their Imam” to the end of the verse.

Mansoor, may God protect him, said: It has been stated from Ali, peace be upon him, in this manner, and it is the interpretation of the verse as meaning that all people will be called with their Imam of the truth of their time so that those who have obeyed him will be separated from those who have not obeyed him, and the other interpretation is that the verse includes the Imam of the truth and the Imam of falsehood; as it has narrated from ibn Abbas: “It means with the Imam of their time who invited them toward misguidance or guidance in the world; as God Almighty has said: ‘And We made them leaders who guide by Our command,’ and said: ‘And We made them leaders who invite toward the fire,’” and the proof of this is the words of God Almighty that has said about Pharaoh: “He will go ahead of his people on the Day of Judgment, so he will lead them into the fire, which is an evil place to be led into”; because it indicates that the Imams of people in the world are their leaders on the Day of Judgment, so they will take them to the Hell or Heaven, and this is another narration from the Ahl al-Bayt:

So he said: My father narrated to me from his father,-so he mentioned the Hadith until he said:- Then Husain, peace be upon him, and his companions continued their journey, so when they reached the region of Tha‘labiyyah, a man named Bishar ibn Ghalib came to him and said: O son of Messenger of God! Tell me about the words of God Almighty that has said: “On the Day We will call every people with their Imam.” So he said: “An Imam who invited toward guidance and they answered him, and an Imam who invited toward misguidance and they answered him, those are in Heaven and these are in Hell, and this is the words of God Almighty that has said: ‘A group shall be in Heaven and a group in Hell.’

Mansoor, may God protect him, said: This is the interpretation of the words of God that has said: “Thus We let some oppressors have power over some others because of what they earned,” and it has also been mentioned in the narration of ibn Mas‘ud from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, that he said: “God will gather people on the Day of Judgment, so a caller will call out: ‘O people! Is not it fair from your God, Who created you, formed you, and provided you with sustenance, that He makes every human being accompany the one whom he followed in the world?’ They say: ‘It is.’ So he will say: ‘Therefore, every human being shall accompany the one whom he followed in the world.’ So every human being will accompany the one whom he followed in the world.”

Translation:

Mansoor, may God protect him, said: They have a word about this Hadith. Muqatil ibn Hayyan has narrated from Ikrimah who said: “When ibn Abbas was sitting, a man came to him and said: ‘O ibn Abbas! I heard something strange about the sun and the moon from Ka‘b al-Ahbar!’ Ibn Abbas, who was reclining, sat straight and said: ‘What did you hear?’ He said: ‘He thought that on the Day of Judgment, they bring the sun and the moon like two beheaded cows and cast them into Hell!’” Ikramah said: “So ibn Abbas became very angry and said: ‘Ka‘b lied! Ka‘b lied! Ka‘b lied! -Three times- Rather, it is Judaism that he wants to bring into Islam! God is Greater and more Honorable than to punish a created being for its obedience! Have you not heard the words of God Who says: “He made the sun and the moon subservient to you while they are diligent”? He means that they are diligent in obeying Him. So how is it possible for Him to punish two of His servants that He has praised for being diligent in obeying Him?! May God kill this Jewish priest and make his Judaism tendency ugly! How reckless he is against God, and how big his lie against these obedient servants of God is!’” Mansoor, may God protect him, said: May God have mercy on ibn Abbas! Because he made a mistake in this statement, for although Ka‘b was like what he described, but the Hadith he narrated about the sun and the moon is in accordance with the Book of God, where He has said: “Indeed, you and whatever you worship instead of God will be the fuel of Hell, and you are (all) bound to enter it,” and there is no doubt that the sun and the moon have also been among the things that people have worshiped instead of God, even though they are inanimate beings and will not be tormented by entering the fire, and their entering it is only for their worshipers to be humiliated, not because those two are sinners; as He said: “If they had been gods, they would not have entered it, and they will be there forever,” and the same applies to the stones that God has made the fuel of Hell; as He has said: “Its fuel is people and stones”; because it is clear that stones have no sins. Also, Hasan al-Basri has made a similar mistake; as Abdullah al-Danaj has narrated: “I heard Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman narrate a Hadith at the time of Khalid ibn Abdullah al-Qasri in this mosque, i.e., the mosque of Basra, after Hasan came and sat with him, he said: ‘Abu Hurairah narrated to us that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said: “Indeed, the sun and the moon will be in the fire like two cows on the Day of Judgment.”’ So Hasan said: ‘What is their sin?!’ (Abu Salamah) said: ‘I tell you a Hadith from the Messenger of God, peace and blessing of God be upon him and his family, and you say what is their sin?!’” There is a lesson in this for those who rush to reject Hadiths and take the risk of ijtihad against the text; because perhaps they pay attention to one aspect and do not pay attention to another aspect. Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Babawayh [d. 381 AH] has also narrated in the book Ilal al-Shara’i‘, from his father, from Sa‘d ibn Abdullah, from Ibrahim ibn Mahziyar, from his brother, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Hammad ibn Uthman, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdullah Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, peace be upon them, that he said: “When the Day of Judgment arrives, they will bring the sun and the moon in the form of two beheaded cows and cast them into the fire along with those who worshiped them, because those two were satisfied with their being worshipped,” and this reason mentioned (at the end of the Hadith) is what the narrators have added; because it is a false reason that conflicts with the Book of God, where it narrates from every inanimate being that is worshiped instead of God that says on the Day of Judgment: “We were unaware of your worshipping (us),” and (this addition) does not exist in the narration of Muhammad ibn Muslim.
