Hadith No. 9

The Ummah is never without one who fights by the command of Allah.

رَوَى الْحَاكِمُ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ [ت405هـ] فِي «الْمُسْتَدْرَكِ عَلَى الصَّحِيحَيْنِ»[1]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، حَدَّثَنَا بَحْرُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، أَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ شِمَاسَةَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ عِنْدَ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ مَخْلَدٍ، وَعِنْدَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: «لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ إِلَّا عَلَى شِرَارِ الْخَلْقِ، هُمْ شَرٌّ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، لَا يَدْعُونَ اللَّهَ بِشَيْءٍ إِلَّا رَدَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ»، فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ إِذَا أَقْبَلَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، فَقَالَ مَسْلَمَةُ: «يَا عُقْبَةُ، اسْمَعْ مَا يَقُولُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ!» فَقَالَ عُقْبَةُ: هُوَ أَعْلَمُ، أَمَّا أَنَا فَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:

لَا تَزَالُ عِصَابَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يُقَاتِلُونَ عَلَى أَمْرِ اللَّهِ قَاهِرِينَ عَلَى الْعَدُوِّ، لَا يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ خَالَفَهُمْ، حَتَّى تَأْتِيَهُمُ السَّاعَةُ وَهُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ.

فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: «أَجَلْ، ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ اللَّهُ رِيحًا رِيحُهَا رِيحُ الْمِسْكِ وَمَسُّهَا مَسُّ الْحَرِيرِ، فَلَا تَتْرُكُ نَفْسًا فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةٍ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ إِلَّا قَبَضَتْهُ، ثُمَّ يَبْقَى شِرَارُ النَّاسِ، عَلَيْهِمْ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ».

Translation:

Hakim al-Nishapuri [d. 405 AH] has narrated in the book al-Mustadrak Ala al-Sahihain, (in this manner that) he has said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub narrated to us, (he said:) Bahr ibn Nasr al-Khawlani narrated to us, (he said:) Abdullah ibn Wahb narrated to us, (he said:) Amr ibn Harith informed me that Yazid ibn Abi Habib narrated to him that Abd al-Rahman ibn Shimasah narrated to him that he was in the presence of Maslamah ibn Makhlad, while Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As was with him. Then Abdullah said: “The Day of Judgment does not come except upon the worst of creation. They are worse than the people of (the age of) ignorance. They ask nothing from Allah except that He turns them down.” At that moment, Uqbah ibn Amir arrived. Then Maslamah said: “O Uqbah! Listen to what Abdullah is saying!” So Uqbah said: “He knows best. But I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) say:

A group from my Ummah will always fight for the command of Allah while they will be victorious over the enemy. And one who opposes them will not harm them, until the Day of Judgment comes upon them while they are in this state.

Then Abdullah said: “Yes. Then Allah sends a wind whose fragrance is like that of musk and whose softness is like that of silk. Then it does not leave anyone in whose heart is a speck of faith except that it takes his life. Then the worst of people remain, and the Day of Judgment comes upon them.”

Consideration

قَالَ الْمَنْصُورُ حَفِظَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي صَحِيحِهِ[2] مِنْ طَرِيقِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ، وَقَدْ ضُعِّفَ، وَطَرِيقُ الْحَاكِمِ طَرِيقٌ صَحِيحٌ، وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ آخَرُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ النَّاسَ بِمَا لَا يَعْرِفُونَ، فَيَنْبَغِي الْإِعْرَاضُ عَمَّا تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ، خَاصَّةً إِذَا لَمْ يُسْنِدْهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ قَوْلُهُ أَنَّ السَّاعَةَ تَقُومُ عَلَى شِرَارِ النَّاسِ مِمَّا تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ، وَ«الْقِتَالُ عَلَى أَمْرِ اللَّهِ» فِي حَدِيثِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ هُوَ الْقِتَالُ عَلَى أَنْ يَكُونَ الْأَمْرُ لِلَّهِ وَحْدَهُ، وَلَا يَكُونُ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْأَمِيرُ خَلِيفَتَهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ دُونَ سَائِرِ النَّاسِ، وَلَا تَجِدُ عِصَابَةَ الْحَقِّ إِلَّا مُقَاتِلِينَ أَوْ مُسْتَعِدِّينَ لِلْقِتَالِ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مُقَاتِلًا وَلَا مُسْتَعِدًّا لِلْقِتَالِ فَلَيْسَ مِنْهُمْ، وَالْمُسْتَعِدُّ لِلْقِتَالِ كَالْمُقَاتِلِ.

Translation:

Mansoor (may Allah protect him) said: Muslim has narrated it in his Sahih through Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Wahb, who has been considered weak. And Hakim’s chain of transmission is an authentic one. And this is another hadith indicating that Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As narrated things to people that they did not know. So one should turn away from anything he alone has narrated, especially when he has not attributed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family). And his statement that the Day of Judgment comes upon the worst of creation is not one of the things that he alone has said. And “fighting for the command of Allah” in the Hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) is fighting for the command to belong to Allah alone. And this will not happen except when the commander is His caliph on Earth, not other people. And you do not find the group of the truth except in a state of war or preparation for war. And whoever is not in a state of war or preparation for war is not one of them. And one who prepares for war is like one who engages in war.

Hadith No. 22“People are called with the Imam of the truth of their time, so that those who have followed him are separated from those who have not.”“We call every people with their Imam”: “We call each generation of this Ummah with their Imam” the Hadith of Ya‘qub ibn Shu‘ayb
Hadith No. 23“The Imam is called Allah’s caliph on the Earth because Allah has appointed him on the Earth, and he leads by Allah’s command.”“Allah said: ‘I want to create a being with My own hand and make his offspring sent Prophets, righteous servants, and guided Imams. Hadith No. 25The Earth will not be unless there is a scholar on it, and the scholar may not be visibly present.“The Earth will not be unless there is a scholar on it” the Hadith of Ya‘qub ibn Shu‘ayb
Hadith No. 26The Earth is never without someone who establishes proof for Allah, and he is either visibly present or hidden due to fear.“O Allah! The Earth is not without someone who rises for Allah with proof—whether he is visibly present and well-known, or hidden and anonymous” the Hadith of Kumayl ibn Ziyad
Hadith No. 27Allah is not worshipped except through a living and visibly present Imam.“Does the Earth remain without a living, visibly present scholar whom people turn to in their lawful and unlawful matters? In that case, Allah would not be worshipped” the Hadith of Ya‘qub al-Sarraj
Hadith No. 28The need for an Imam, even if he is not visibly present.“The Earth does not remain without a visibly present or hidden Imam” the Hadith of Muhammad ibn Muslim
Hadith No. 29“If the Earth remains without an Imam, it surely caves in.”“Does the Earth remain without an Imam? Allah forbid! It does not remain even for a single hour. In that case, it surely caves in” the Hadith of Ahmad ibn Umar al-Hallal
Hadith No. 30When the Imam is gone, what is promised to people comes to them.“Is it possible that the Imam passes away without leaving a child behind (as his successor)? That is not possible unless Allah is angry with His creation, so He grants them no respite” the Hadith of Zurarah ibn A‘yan
Hadith No. 31“The Earth is not without Allah’s caliph even for a single hour, as long as there is a respite for people.”“And were it not for one of the proofs of Allah who is on the Earth, the Earth would cast out all that lies within it and bring down all that rests upon it” the Hadith of Zurarah ibn A‘yan
Hadith No. 32The proof does not separate from people.“The proof was before people, is with people, and will be after people” the Hadith of Aban ibn Taghlib
Hadith No. 33If there are only two people on the Earth, one of them will surely be an Imam or a proof.“If there are only two people on the Earth, one of them will surely be the Imam” the Hadith of Yunus ibn Ya‘qub
