Hadith No. 26

The earth is never devoid of one who establishes proof for Allah, and he is either visibly present or hidden due to fear.

Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Bābawayh [Died in 381 AH] has narrated in the book of “Kamāl al-Din wa Tamām al-Ni’mah”, (in this way that) has said: Muhammad ibn Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Walid may God be pleased with him, narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Saffār and Sa’d ibn Abdullah and Abdullah ibn Ja’far al-Himyari, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isā and Ibrahim ibn Hāshim both, from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abi Najrān, from ‘Asim ibn Hamid, from Abu Hmazah al-Thumāli, from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Jundub al-Fazāri, from Kumayl ibn Zyād al-Nakha’I that said:

Amir al-Mu’minin Ali ibn Abi Tālib peace be upon him, took my hand and led me to the desert. So when we reached the desert, he took a deep breath and then said: O Kumayl ibn Zyād, these hearts are containers and the best of them is the one that is more preservative. Remember what I tell you. People are three types: A divine knowledgeable one, and an apprentice who is on the way of salvation, and dust and shavings; those who follow every loud shout and gravitate toward a side with any wind, they have neither have got wise by the light of knowledge nor have they taken shelter in a stable pillar. O Kumayl! Knowledge is better than wealth. Knowledge protects you and you protect wealth, and wealth decreases by donation and knowledge increases by donation and the product of wealth is destroyed by its decline. O Kumayl ibn Zyād! Loving knowledge is a debt that will be paid; human by it, gains obedience in his life and good name after his death and knowledge is the ruler and wealth is the obedient. O Kumayl! Those who store wealth are dead while they are alive, and the knowledgeable ones remain as long as the time remains; their selves perish, but their wisdom is in the hearts. Oh, here - and he pointed to his chest - lies a lot of knowledge, I wish I could find bearers for it! Yes, I found someone who understood well, but was not trustworthy for it; he used the tools of religion for the world, and by the proofs of God, he sought superiority over His creatures and by His Favors, over His friends, or someone who was a follower of the bearers of knowledge, but had no insight into its twists and turns, with the first doubt that would arise, uncertainty entered his heart. Know that neither this nor that; or one who is thirsty for pleasures, has given his control to lusts, or one who seeks to learn and store; none of them protects the religion. The most similar thing to those two are grazing animals. In this way, knowledge dies with the death of its bearers. Yes, O God! The earth does not remain empty of the one who rises up for God to the proof, whether visible and famous or hidden and anonymous, so that the proofs and signs of God do not get invalidated, and how many are they and where are they? I swear to God, they are few in numbers and great in dignity. God preservers His proofs and signs by them so that they entrust them to someone like themselves and plant them in the heart of the like of themselves. Knowledge has rushed toward them by true insight, and they have been mingled with the spirit of certainty, and have considered easy that which their wealthy ones have considered difficult, and have made friendship with that which the ignorant ones are afraid of, and they accompany this world with bodies whose lives are hung from the top world. They are the Caliphs of God on His earth and the inviters toward His religion. Ah, Ah, how eager I am to meet them! O Kumayl! Go back whenever you want, and it has been said in the narration of Fudhayl ibn Khudayj: I ask forgiveness from God for myself and you.

Mansoor may God protect him, said: This is a proved narration from Kumayl ibn Zyād, and he was from the close helpers of Ali peace be upon him, and Abd al-Rahmān ibn Jundub and Fudhayl ibn Khudayj and Mujāhid and Abu Sālih and ‘Ubaydullah ibn ‘Umar al-Taymi have narrated it from him, and it is the most correct thing in this respect; (as) ibn Abd al-Bir [Died in 463 AH] has mentioned it in the book of “Jāmi’ al-Bayān al-‘Ilm wa Fadhlih” and has said: “It is a famous narration before the people of knowledge that considering its fame before them, it does not need any evidence” and ibn Kathir [Died in 774 AH] has said in the book of “al-Bidāyah wal-Nahāyah”: “A community of the trustworthy and preservative narrators have narrated it”.

I know that knowledge, all of it, will be isolated and its sources will not dry, and You do not leave the earth be empty of a proof for Yourself upon Your servants, whether visible ant not be obeyed or hidden and anonymous, so that Your proofs do not get invalidated and Your friends, after You guided them, do not go astray, rather where are they and how many are they? They are few in number and great in dignity before God Almighty; they are the followers of the leaders of the religion, the Imams of guidance, and they are well-bred by their manners and they take steps by their methods, then knowledge along with the truth of the faith rushes toward them, so their lives answer the leaders of the religion and consider their sayings easy which are difficult for others, and become accustomed to that which the deniers fear and the extravagant reject. They are the followers of the knowledgeable ones who by obedience to God Almighty, accompany people of the world and His friends, and they practice religiosity by Taqiyyah about their religion and fear of their enemy, so their lives are hung from the top world. Their knowledgeable ones and followers in the false government are silent and waiting for the government of the truth, and soon God will fulfill the truth with His words and destroy the falsehood. Ah ah, blessed are they for their patience in their religion during their silence and how eager I am to meet them during the rise of their government! May God gather us and them along with their righteous fathers and wives and children in the Gardens of Eden”.
