Hadith No. 5

The Earth is never without a scholar who knows addition and imperfection.

رَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَابَوَيْهِ [ت381ه‍] فِي «كَمَالِ الدِّينِ وَتَمَامِ النِّعْمَةِ»[1]، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي الصَّبَّاحِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ -يَعْنِي جَعْفَرَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّادِقَ- عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَمْ يَدَعِ الْأَرْضَ إِلَّا وَفِيهَا عَالِمٌ يَعْلَمُ الزِّيَادَةَ وَالنُّقْصَانَ، فَإِذَا زَادَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ شَيْئًا رَدَّهُمْ، وَإِذَا نَقَصُوا شَيْئًا أَكْمَلَهُ لَهُمْ، وَلَوْلَا ذَلِكَ لَالْتَبَسَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أُمُورُهُمْ.

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Babawayh [d. 381 AH] has narrated in the book Kamal al-Din Wa Tamam al-Ni‘mah, (in this manner that) he has said: My father and Muhammad ibn Hasan (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated to us, they said: Sa‘d ibn Abdullah and Abdullah ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Isa, from Yunus ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Abu al-Sabbah, from Abu Abdullah—meaning Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq—(peace be upon him), who said:

Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has not left the Earth except that there is a scholar on it who knows addition and imperfection, so that whenever believers add something, he brings them back, and whenever they decrease something, he perfects it for them. And were it not so, the affairs of believers would have become doubtful for them.

Verse No. 9Earth has never been unless there has been an Imam on it who would prohibit corruption on it.“So why were there no remaining ones from the generations before you who would prohibit corruption on Earth, except for a few of those whom We saved among them?!” (Hud/ 116)
Verse No. 10“Earth is not empty of one who follows the Prophet in everything, and he is an inviter.”“Say: ‘This is my way: I invite toward Allah with insight, I and one who follows me’” (Yusuf/ 108)
Verse No. 11“Indeed, there exists among people a man who is well-aware of Allah. It is obligatory for them to ask him so that he informs them about Allah.”“(He is) the Most Compassionate. So, ask one well-aware of Him” (Al-Furqan/ 59)
Verse No. 12“There is no time without a man from the people of remembrance, whom people ask about what they do not know, and he gives them a correct answer.”“Ask the people of remembrance if you do not know” (An-Nahl/ 43; Al-Anbiya/ 7)

Verse No. 17“Indeed, there are two witnesses between the Prophet and his nation: the Book of Allah and one who has knowledge of the Book. And he is Allah’s caliph among them after the Prophet.”“Say: ‘Allah and one who has knowledge of the Book are sufficient as witnesses between me and you’” (Ar-Ra‘d/ 43)

So whoever strives against them with his hand is a believer, and whoever strives against them with his tongue is a believer, and whoever strives against them with his heart is a believer, and there is no faith—even to the weight of a mustard seed—in anyone other than them” the Hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud
Hadith No. 16There are caliphs after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family).“Indeed, the Children of Israel were governed by the Prophets; whenever a Prophet passed away, another Prophet would rise in his place. And indeed, there will be no Prophet after me. They said: Then what will there be, O Messenger of Allah? He said: There will be caliphs.” the Hadith of Abu Hurairah

Hadith No. 31“The Earth is not without Allah’s caliph even for a single hour, as long as there is a respite for people.”“And were it not for one of the proofs of Allah who is on the Earth, the Earth would cast out all that lies within it and bring down all that rests upon it” the Hadith of Zurarah ibn A‘yan
Hadith No. 32The proof does not separate from people.“The proof was before people, is with people, and will be after people” the Hadith of Aban ibn Taghlib
Hadith No. 33If there are only two people on the Earth, one of them will surely be an Imam or a proof.“If there are only two people on the Earth, one of them will surely be the Imam” the Hadith of Yunus ibn Ya‘qub
