Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani
(64) The need for the Mahdi derives from the need to know the rules of God and their establishment, which cannot be achieved except through His Caliph on earth, and it is clear that knowing the rules of God and their establishment is necessary for His servitude and consequently the salvation of people in this world and the hereafter and therefore, nothing can make people needless of Mahdi. According to the rule which Allamah may God protect him has mentioned regarding the advent of Imam Mahdi, that his advent does not require the gathering of all people and requires the gathering of a sufficient number of them, some questions have arisen for me, which are as follows: 1. Is the quantity and quality of this sufficient number known for him or is its knowledge with God? 2. Did this sufficient number not exist in the time of the caliphs of the past? 3. Given that the caliphs of the past had a large force at times in history, for example, the Messenger of God in the war with the Romans had 30,000 men, Imam Ali in Siffin had about 100,000 men, Imam Hassan in the war with Mu’awiyah had about 12,000 men, Imam Hussain in Kufa had about 18,000 men, Imam Sadiq during the Khorasani uprising had about 100,000 Khorasanis who wanted him to rise up, even during the absence of Imam Mahdi, the Shia community got organized and ready for the advent many times, for example, during the Safavid period, waiting and readiness for the advent were high, to the point that the great scholars of the Shia such as Majlisi and others, believed it was time for the advent and the Safavid were preparers of the ground for the advent; because most of the narrations corresponded to the conditions of their time, but it did not happen. With this introduction, please explain where the problem were and what were the shortcomings that the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt did not achieve their goals? 4. Do we not have the shortcomings of the past? 5. What is so special about our generation that did not exist in them, while they seem to be better than us physically and mentally? Considering the difficult conditions and the complexity of the situation and our physical and mental weakness that have been created over time, we need God’s special grace as well as Imam Mahdi’s special attention may we be his sacrifice in order to provide a sufficient number of helpers who have not any equals in the pas eras. From every side I went, I gained nothing but terror I seek refuge from this desert and the infinite path I lost my way in this dark night Oh you the guidance star, rise from a corner[1]

Some more of my friends’ questions are proffered: 1. Allamah Khorasani in page 315 of the book “Return to Islam” has said: “And if ever I have capability on the earth, I will punish them [the militant and corrupt rulers] for their deeds; since removing them from the path of Mahdi, is obligatory for every Muslim who is capable of doing that.” Now the question is does he have permission from his Excellency Mahdi to do this or he acts upon his own certain viewpoint and Ijtihad[1]? Is the meaning of “capability” establishment of sovereignty? In this case, what is the difference between this sovereignty and other Islamic sovereignties? 2. In one of the sayings, he has likened himself to his Excellency Muslim ibn Aqil. His Excellency Muslim had permission from the Imam of his time. Does he have permission from Imam Mahdi? Some scholars like Imam Khomeini also considered their revolutionary movement derived from Imam Hussain’s revolt, however they did not claim they have permission from Imam Mahdi, and they were acting upon their own viewpoint and Ijtihad, which of course based on Allamah’s opinion, viewpoint and Ijtihad solely do not provide certainty. 3. Just as Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him) is promised, the inviters and preparers of the grounds of his advent must also be promised based on the order of common sense; because the intellect orders that the Messenger of God and other Imams of Ahl al-Bayt give good tidings of them and lead the people toward them. Now, how is that Allamah Khorasani insists us just to rely on certain items of the book “Return to Islam” and do not rely on items that are referred to the promised Khorasani in valid narrations? In this case, then how can we achieve complete certitude? In general, the narrations that have been quoted from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) and the Amir al-Mu’minīn and other Imams of Ahl al-Bayt, have explicitly mentioned the following items to identify one of the special representatives of Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him): - The owner of black flags - Being Khorasani - Being Hasani or Hussaini - A handsome young man - Has a mole on his left palm - Foremost of his army is Shu’ayb ibn Sālih Tamimi - Taliqan’s treasures accept him - Fights with the Umayyad of the end time (Sufyani) and defeats him - Imam Mahdi is hidden in his army and guides him and … All these items show that the Messenger of God and the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt have felt necessary to mention some sings to identify him, just as Salmān al-Fārsi who matched the signs that he had taken from holy books with the Messenger of God when he entered Medina and he achieved complete certitude and believed in his Excellency. Please explain more about this matter.
