Critique & Response

I skimmed through the book Return to Islam hoping to find a positive solution, but what I found was only denying others! After all this writing and stating generalities, the author has not specified what Muslims’ duty is during the Mahdi’s absence. What must they do in the end?! Must they abandon everything, hold protests, go on strike, and declare that they will not stop their protests and strike until the Mahdi appears and takes over the government?! If, hypothetically, Mansoor Khorasani were to take charge of the affairs of Muslims now, what would be his practical plan for managing Islamic societies?!

Another problem is that it appears Mansoor too, like others, has invited people toward himself, while in the book, he has clearly declared the falsity of whoever invites people toward himself, and has explicitly stated that the Mahdi is the only one who is allowed to invite people toward himself. This itself means that there is a dead end in the nation of the end time, which contradicts the perfection of Islam.

Frankly, there is no way to establish the government of Allah on Earth before the government of the Mahdi (peace be upon him) except through the government of the Islamic jurist, as it exists in Iran, with all its flaws and shortcomings.

It appears that you only “skimmed through” the book Return to Islam by Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, and did not read it with sufficient care and contemplation. Therefore, you have not grasped many of its details and have misunderstood it. Of course, this is not a book that a cursory glance is sufficient for, but rather one that requires a detailed and in-depth study. Based on this, you should note the following points:

Firstly, the main and clear message of this great book, contrary to your imperfect understanding, is not only “denying others,” but rather “proving the Mahdi” and “denying others,” which is the manifestation of «لا إله إلا اللّه»; “There is no god but Allah,” the interpretation of «البيعة للّه»; “Allegiance belongs to Allah,” the slogan of Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, and the mainstay of his invitation. All this reformer and diligent scholar says is that there is no government except for that of Allah, and his intended meaning by the government of Allah, contrary to the absurd and erroneous intended meaning of the Kharijites, is not the absence of the human being’s government, but rather the government of a human whom Allah has appointed, and He has announced this appointment through His Book and the mutawatir Sunnah of His Prophet or through a clear sign. This human is “the Mahdi” who now lives among people but is absent, that is, hidden, and the reason for his absence, contrary to what most people think, is not firstly Allah’s will and action but firstly people’s will and action, as they made him fear for his life and did not provide the necessary conditions for his government. Therefore, they are responsible for all the consequences and repercussions of his absence, even if these consequences and repercussions are considered “a dead end in the nation of the end time”; because this “dead end” is not attributed to “Islam” so that it would contradict its “perfection,” but rather it is attributed to people who caused it by their bad choice; ﴿فَاعْتَبِرُوا يَا أُولِي الْأَبْصَارِ[1]; “So learn your lesson, O people of insight.”

Secondly, the strategy of Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani for the Mahdi’s advent and his government is a comprehensive strategy with security, cultural, and political aspects; because for the Mahdi’s advent, in the sense of the possibility of reaching him, he considers it necessary to have a sufficient number of strong and trustworthy Muslims to protect him from potential dangers; since he considers that the only reason for his non-advent, in the sense of the impossibility of reaching him, is his fear of being killed or captured, and he believes that if his security is guaranteed by this number of Muslims, then his advent, in the sense of the possibility of reaching him, will be inevitable. Based on this, due to the rational and religious necessity of preparing the ground for the Mahdi’s advent, he seeks to gather a sufficient number of strong and trustworthy Muslims to protect him from potential dangers, and asks all of them for help for this purpose; because in the view of this truthful scholar, the Mahdi’s advent will be inevitable if his security is guaranteed, even if his government is not possible; considering that there is no correlation between his advent and his government, and his advent without his government is still beneficial. Rather, his advent is a prelude to his government; because the government of one who is not visibly present is difficult. Therefore, preparing the ground for his advent is a prelude to preparing the ground for his government.

Furthermore, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani considers that the condition for the establishment of the Mahdi’s government is the gathering of a sufficient number of people to help and obey him. He believes that if this number of them pledge this help and obedience, the Mahdi will inevitably act to establish the government; because the government is not only a right for him but also a duty, to the extent that if he does not act to establish it after the conditions are met, it would be right to strike his neck; as it has been narrated from Ali (peace be upon him) that he said: «وَاللَّهِ لَوْ لَمْ يَخْرُجْ لَضُرِبَتْ عُنُقُهُ»[2]; “By Allah, if he does not rise, his neck will be struck”; considering that in this case, he alone will be responsible for all the corruption and oppression that exist on Earth. Therefore, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, while gathering a sufficient number of Muslims to protect the Mahdi, also gathers a sufficient number of them to help and obey him, and asks them all for help for this purpose; because in the view of this genius of the time, the Mahdi’s government will be inevitable if his help and obedience are guaranteed, and this guarantee is called “allegiance”[3] in Islam. Therefore, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani takes allegiance for the Mahdi from Muslims of the world; meaning that he makes a covenant with them that when the Mahdi comes to them, they will help and obey him and not abandon or disobey him as they did with Allah’s caliphs before him. Consequently, if a sufficient number of Muslims pledge allegiance to him to help and obey the Mahdi, his government will be realized for them by the permission of Allah. Similarly, if a sufficient number of Muslims pledge allegiance to him to protect the Mahdi, his advent will be realized for them by the permission of Allah. This is a perfect and accurate plan derived from the intellect and in accordance with the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. Therefore, whoever refuses to accept it is in great error. ﴿لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا خِزْيٌ ۖ وَلَهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ[4]; “For them, there is disgrace in the world, and for them, there is a severe punishment in the Hereafter.”

Thirdly, it was made clear from the foregoing that Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, contrary to your strange illusion, does not invite toward “himself,” but rather toward “the Mahdi” in the clearest way possible; because his invitation toward solidarity to protect, help, and obey “the Mahdi” is by no means considered an invitation toward “oneself,” and calling it “an invitation toward oneself” is like calling day night, which is nothing but arbitrariness in naming. Only those who assert a right to rule for “themselves,” obligate people to protect, help, and obey “themselves,” and have no concern but preserving the government of “themselves” are inviting toward “themselves”; or the selfish who have sunk into the mire of claims and have nothing to say but “I am this” and “I am that,” and care about nothing but proving their alleged positions; those who equate themselves with Allah’s caliphs and call themselves by their names, while they are of less account with Allah than beetles!

Fourthly, it was made clear from the foregoing that “the government of the Islamic jurist” cannot be an example of “the government of Allah”; because the Islamic jurist is neither Allah nor His caliph on Earth. Therefore, calling the government of the Islamic jurist the government of Allah is fabricating lies against Allah and against the Islamic jurist! The only example of the government of Allah is the government of His caliph on Earth, and if it is difficult to establish the government of His caliph on Earth, it is not easy to establish the government of the Islamic jurist either; because the establishment of any government needs preparation, and the preparation for any government is difficult. Do they then endure the preparation for the government of the Islamic jurist, but not the preparation for the government of Allah’s caliph on Earth?! What is this but baseness, shortsightedness, and foolishness that has penetrated to the depths of their unconscious?! Whenever they are invited to establish the government of one of their own, they rush to it and outdo each other, but rather “they abandon everything, hold protests, go on strike, and declare that they will not stop their protests and strike.” However, when they are invited to establish the government of the Mahdi, they refuse and make excuses, ﴿كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ[5]; “as if they are being driven to death with their eyes wide open.” They say in surprise and denial, “Must they abandon everything, hold protests, go on strike, and declare that they will not stop their protests and strike until the Mahdi appears and takes over the government?!” Woe to them! Assuming that is the case, would they not do that for others?! Why do they withhold it from the Mahdi?! Is the Mahdi inferior to others in their view?! While he is more deserving of ruling over them than others, and all good, blessing, justice, and happiness originate from his government over them! As the righteous servant, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, called out three years before the ordeal of Sham and Iraq and said:

Beware! Know that the horizon of the West is dark with black clouds. Soon a red storm will blow you over and overwhelm your land. It will neither leave a roof for you to take shelter under nor a wall for you to hide behind! At that time, the nation of Muhammad will wish to sacrifice half of its young people to find the Mahdi in a valley from the valleys of the Hijaz!

Beware, O you the ignorant nation! What are you looking for?! And who are you following?! Your leader is the Mahdi. The calmness of your nights and the delight of your days is the Mahdi. Your lasting happiness and the sweetness of your life is the Mahdi. Your prosperity in the world and your salvation in the Hereafter is the Mahdi. So what has stopped you from turning to him?! Or who has filled the void left by him?!...

Do you think you will see justice and flourish in his absence? Or do you think you will have security and happiness in his absence? No, I swear to Allah, then no, I swear to Allah. You will take this wish to your graves as your ancestors took it to their graves; because Allah has not put any benefit in His Caliph’s absence, nor has he created any blessing in the government of other than him!

I am telling you the truth: in his absence, your stomachs will stick to your backs, and you will lie on thorns! You will rage in anger and wish for death morning and evening! Your homes will be uninhabited, and your markets will be closed! Farms will grow thorns, and fruit trees will wither! Livestock herds will be scattered, and there will be no one to gather them! Your heads will have lice, and your hands will be soiled! Your cities will be destroyed, and your villages will be forsaken! No one will cross your alleys, and no one will knock on your doors! Your water channels will run dry, and snakes will nest in your wells! Wolves will wander around your public squares, and owls will screech on top of your towers! Spiders will weave webs on your windows, and frogs will croak in your ponds! You will reside in dark valleys and take shelter on the summit of the mountains! You will hide in the crevices of the rocks, and your companions will be lizards of the desert! Smoke will go up to the sky from your lands, and its fire will not go out! Your enemies will dominate you, and Satans of the East and the West will devour you! They will not listen to the crying of your children, nor will they be merciful to your crippled elders! They will divide your possessions and draw lots for your women! They will not bury your dead, but rather they will leave them for their dogs!

Beware, O people! Do not rush into what is contingent on moments! The world is near to its end, and the time of promises has come. Soon the age of the absence, which you think is peaceful, will erupt, like a raging camel in spring, and will plunge its sharp teeth into your eyes. I swear to the One in Whose Hands are my life and body, what I say is not a poem nor an exaggeration in speech. Soon the cauldron of the world will boil, and the river of time will rage and turn the mill of fitnah and rotate the millstone of chaos. Danger! Danger! Be aware that they will not have mercy on any of you! They will bring the most isolated of you and take out his butter and buttermilk. When the scythe of fitnah falls, the one who stands will be reaped, and the one who sits will be crushed. Danger! Danger! Take your religion and run as long as you have the opportunity! If you find the truth with me, then come to me, even if by crawling over snow; because I will lead you toward the Mahdi, and if you dislike me and refuse to come to me, then leave and go as far as you can; although you cannot go far away; because, I swear to Allah, even if you hide behind the stars of the sky, they will find you and bring you and disgrace you; because this work is not as easy as you have thought, but rather it is a great plight and huge calamity that will make the old impatient and the young sleepless.[6]

This is the call of a great and compassionate scholar who invites toward the Mahdi with a loud voice and warns people with wonderful eloquence against the terrible consequences of his continued absence, but ﴿لَا يَسْمَعُ الصُّمُّ الدُّعَاءَ إِذَا مَا يُنْذَرُونَ[7]; “the deaf cannot hear the call when they are warned.”
