Critique & Response

I glanced through the book Return to Islam in the hope of finding a positive solution, but what I found was only denying others! After all these writing and generalities, the author has not specified the duty of Muslims in the age of absence that what they must do in the end. Should they give up everything, begin sit-down protests, go on strike, and announce that they will not end them until Mahdi appears and takes over the government?! If Mansoor Khorasani is supposed to take over the affairs of Muslims now, what is his practical plan for managing Islamic societies?!

Another problem is that it seems Mansoor too, like others, has invited people toward himself, while in the book he has clearly declared the falsity of whoever invites people toward himself, and stated that Mahdi is the only one who is allowed to invite people toward himself, and this itself means that there is a dead end in the nation of the end time, which contradicts the perfection of Islam.

Indeed, there is no imaginable way to achieve the government of God on the earth before the government of Mahdi, peace be upon him, except for the government of the Islamic jurist, as it exists in Iran, with all its flaws and shortcomings.

It seems that you just “glanced through” the book Return to Islam by Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, and did not read it with sufficient care and consideration, and therefore did not realize many of its details and misunderstood it. Of course, this is not a book that glancing through it would be sufficient, but a book that requires detailed and in-depth study. Based on this, you should pay attention to the following points:

Firstly, the main and clear message of this great book, contrary to your imperfect understanding, is not only “denying others” but “proving Mahdi” and “denying others”, which is the manifestation of “There is no god but Allah”[1], the interpretation of “Allegiance belongs to Allah”[2], the slogan of Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, and the mainstay of his invitation. All this reformer and diligent scholar says is that there is no government except for that of God, and what he means by the government of God, contrary to the absurd and erroneous thought of Khawarij, is not the lack of the human being’s government, but rather the government of one whom God has appointed, and He has announced this appointment through His Book and the mutawatir Sunnah of His Prophet or through a clear sign, and he is “Mahdi” who now lives among people but is absent, that is, hidden, and the reason for his absence, contrary to what most people think, is not firstly God’s will and action but firstly people’s will and action, when they made him fear for his life, and did not provide the necessary conditions for his government. Therefore, they are responsible for all the consequences and complications of his absence, even though these consequences and complications are considered as “a dead end in the nation of the end time”; because this “dead end” is not attributed to “Islam” to contradict its “perfection”, but rather it is attributed to people who caused it by making a wrong decision; ﴿فَاعْتَبِرُوا يَا أُولِي الْأَبْصَارِ[3]; “So learn your lesson, O people of insight”.

Secondly, the strategy of Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani for the advent of Mahdi and his government is a comprehensive strategy with security, cultural and political aspects; because for the advent of Mahdi, in the sense of the possibility to have access to him, he considers it necessary to have a sufficient number of strong and faithful Muslims in order to protect him from possible dangers; since he believes that the only reason for the lack of his advent, in the sense of the impossibility to have access to him, is his fear of being killed or captured, and that if his security is guaranteed by this number of Muslims, his advent, in the sense of the possibility to have access to him, is inevitable. Based on this, due to the intellectual and religious necessity of preparing the ground for the advent of Mahdi, he seeks to gather a sufficient number of strong and faithful Muslims in order to protect him from possible dangers, and asks all of them for help for this purpose; because in the opinion of this righteous scholar, the advent of Mahdi will be inevitable if his security is guaranteed, even though his government will not be possible; considering that there is no correlation between his advent and his government, and his advent without his government is useful as well, but rather his advent is a prelude to his government; because the government of one who is absent is difficult, and therefore, preparing the ground for his advent is a prelude to preparing the ground for his government.

Therefore, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani believes that the condition for the establishment of Mahdi’s government is the gathering of a sufficient number of people in order to help and obey him, and if this number of them undertake this help and obedience, he will inevitably act to establish the government; because the government is not only Mahdi’s right, but also his duty, to the extent that if he does not act to establish it after the conditions are met, it will be right to strike his neck; as it has been narrated from Ali, peace be upon him: «وَاللَّهِ لَوْ لَمْ يَخْرُجْ لَضُرِبَتْ عُنُقُهُ»[4]; “I swear to God, if he does not rise up, his neck will be struck”; considering that in this case he will be solely responsible for all the corruptions and oppressions that exist on the earth. Therefore, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, while gathering a sufficient number of Muslims in order to protect Mahdi, is gathering a sufficient number of them to help and obey him, and asks all of them for help for this purpose; because in the opinion of this genius of the time, the government of Mahdi will be inevitable if their helping and obeying him are guaranteed, and this guarantee is called “allegiance”[5] in Islam. Therefore, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani takes allegiance for Mahdi from Muslims of the world; in the sense that he makes a covenant with them that when Mahdi comes to them, they must help and obey him and not let him down or disobey him as they did to God’s Caliphs before him. Consequently, if a sufficient number of Muslims pledge allegiance to him in order to help and obey Mahdi, his government will be realized for them with the permission of God; as if a sufficient number of Muslims pledge allegiance to him in order to protect Mahdi, his advent will be realized for them with the permission of God. This is a perfect and accurate plan emanating from the intellect, in accordance with the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet. Therefore, whoever refuses to accept it has gone far astray, ﴿لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا خِزْيٌ ۖ وَلَهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ[6]; “for them there is disgrace in the world, and for them there is a severe punishment in the Hereafter”.

It was made clear from the foregoing that Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, contrary to your strange illusion, does not invite toward “himself”, but rather invites toward “Mahdi” in the clearest way possible; because his invitation toward solidarity in order to protect, help and obey “Mahdi” is by no means considered an invitation toward “oneself”, and calling it “an invitation toward oneself” is like calling “night” as “day”, which is nothing but to act autocratically and despotically in naming. Undoubtedly, those who recognize a right to govern for “themselves”, oblige others to protect, help and obey “themselves”, and have no concern but to maintain the government of “themselves” are inviting toward “themselves”; or the selfish who are sunk in the mire of claims and have nothing to say but “I am this” and “I am that”, and care about nothing but to prove their so-called positions; those who associate themselves with God’s Caliphs and call themselves by their names, while they are of less account with God than beetles!

Fourthly, it was made clear from the foregoing that “the government of the Islamic jurist” cannot be an example of “the government of God”; because the Islamic jurist is neither God nor His Caliph on the earth. Therefore, calling the government of the Islamic jurist as the government of God is fabricating lies against God and against the Islamic jurist! The only example of the government of God is the government of His Caliph on the earth, and if it is difficult to establish the government of His Caliph on the earth, it is not easy to establish the government of the Islamic jurist either; because the establishment of every government needs preparation, and the preparation for every government is difficult. So do they endure preparing the ground for the government of the Islamic jurist, but not endure preparing the ground for the government of God’s Caliph on the earth?! What is this but baseness, the lack of foresight and foolishness that have penetrated to the bottom of their unconscious?! Whenever they are invited to establish the government of one from among them, they rush to it and surpass each other, but rather “they give up everything, begin sit-down protests, go on strike, and announce that they will not end them until their master takes over the government”. But when they are invited to establish the government of Mahdi, they refuse and make excuses, ﴿كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ[7]; “as if they are being driven to death with their eyes wide open”; they say in amazement and denial, “Should they give up everything, begin sit-down protests, go on strike, and announce that they will not end them until Mahdi appears and takes over the government?!”. Woe to them! Assuming that is so, would they not do it for others?! Why do they withhold it from Mahdi?! Is Mahdi inferior to others in their opinion?! While he deserves to rule over them more than others, and all good, blessings, justice and happiness originate from his government over them! As the righteous servant, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, called out three years prior to the fitnah of Sham and Iraq, and said:

“Beware! Know that the horizon of the West is dark with black clouds. Soon a red storm will blow you over and overwhelm your land. It will neither leave a roof for you to take shelter under, nor a wall for you to hide behind! At that time, the nation of Muhammad will wish to sacrifice half of its youth in order to find Mahdi in a valley from the valleys of the Hijaz!

Beware, O you the ignorant nation! What are you looking for?! And who are you following?! Your leader is Mahdi. The calmness of your nights and the delight of your days is Mahdi. Your lasting happiness and the sweetness of your life is Mahdi. Your prosperity in the world and your salvation in the Hereafter is Mahdi. So what has stopped you from turning to him?! Or who has filled the void left by him?!...

Do you think you will see justice and flourish in his absence? Or do you think you will have security and happiness in his absence? No, I swear to God, then no, I swear to God. You will take this wish to your graves as your ancestors took it to their graves; for God has not put any benefit in His Caliph’s absence, and has not created any blessing in the government of anyone other than him!

I am telling you the truth: in his absence, your stomachs will stick to your backs, and you will lie on thorns! You will rage in anger and wish for death morning and evening! Your homes will be uninhabited and your markets closed! Farms will grow thorns and fruit trees will wither! Livestock herds will be scattered and there will be no one to gather them! Your heads will have lice and your hands will be soiled! Your cities will be destroyed and your villages forsaken! No one will cross your alleys, and no one will knock on your doors! There will be no water in your qanats, and snakes will nest in your wells! Wolves will wander around your public squares, and owls will screech on top of your towers! Spiders will weave webs on your windows, and frogs will croak in your ponds! You will reside in dark valleys and take shelter on the summit of the mountains! You will hide in crevices of the rocks, and your companions will be lizards of the desert! Smoke will go up to the sky from your lands and its fire will not go out! Your enemies will dominate you, and Satans of the East and the West will devour you! They will not listen to the crying of your children, nor will they be merciful to your crippled elders! They will divide your possessions and draw lots for your women! They will not bury your dead, rather will leave them for their dogs!

Beware, O people! Do not rush into what is contingent on moments! The world is near to its end, and the time of promises has come. Soon the age of the absence, which you think is peaceful, will erupt, like a raging camel in spring, and will plunge its sharp teeth into your eyes. I swear to the One in Whose Hands are my life and body, what I say is not a poem, nor an exaggeration in speech. Soon the cauldron of the world will boil, and the river of time will rage and turn the mill of fitnah and rotate the millstone of chaos. Danger! Danger! Be aware that they will not have mercy on any of you! They will bring the most isolated of you and take out his butter and buttermilk. When the scythe of fitnah falls, the one who stands will be reaped and the one who sits will be crushed. Danger! Danger! Take your religion and run as long as you have the opportunity! If you found the truth with me, then come to me, even though by crawling over snow; for I will lead you toward Mahdi, and if you reject me and refuse to come to me, then leave and go as far as you can; although you cannot go far away; because, I swear to God, even if you hide behind the stars of the sky, they will find you and bring you and disgrace you; for this work is not as easy as you have thought, rather is a great plight and a huge calamity that will make the old impatient and the young sleepless”[8].

These are the call of a great and compassionate scholar who obviously invites toward Mahdi with a loud voice, and warns people with wonderful eloquence against the terrible consequences of the continuation of his absence, but ﴿لَا يَسْمَعُ الصُّمُّ الدُّعَاءَ إِذَا مَا يُنْذَرُونَ[9]; “the deaf cannot hear the call when they are warned”.
