Critique & Response

I read the book Return to Islam several times and saw no problem with it. To the best of my knowledge, I found everything in it to conform to the intellect and Sharia. However, the key question is, how can I be sure that its author, His Eminence Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, himself follows these truths in practice and with certainty, and is not like other scholars who say what they do not do? Perhaps I can be sure of that if I know that he is the promised Mansoor Khorasani, of whom the Prophet and his Ahl al-Bayt have given glad tidings that he is the preparer of the ground for the advent of Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him. If this is the case, then he definitely follows these truths in practice and with certainty.

Allah has bestowed a great favor upon you by opening the ears of your heart and then having you hear the truth so that you may understand and believe in it. If He had willed, He could have sealed your heart or left you in ignorance of it, in which case you would have been among the losers. As for the answer to your key question, note the following points:

Firstly, you do not need to be sure that His Eminence Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani himself follows these truths in practice and with certainty to follow them yourself; because you must follow them considering that they are truths, whether he himself follows them or not. In other words, you must follow these truths just as he must, and his not following them does not harm you if you follow them, just as your not following them does not harm him if he follows them, ﴿وَلَا تَكْسِبُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ إِلَّا عَلَيْهَا ۚ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى[1]; “and each soul earns only for itself, and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another.” Therefore, Allah has said to His Prophet: ﴿قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَكُمُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَنِ اهْتَدَى فَإِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِي لِنَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا يَضِلُّ عَلَيْهَا ۖ وَمَا أَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ بِوَكِيلٍ[2]; “Say: ‘O People! The Truth has come to you from your Lord. So, whoever is guided, is guided only for his own good, and whoever goes astray, goes astray only to his own loss. And I am not a keeper over you,’” and said: ﴿قَدْ جَاءَكُمْ بَصَائِرُ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَنْ أَبْصَرَ فَلِنَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ عَمِيَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۚ وَمَا أَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ بِحَفِيظٍ[3]; “Insights have come to you from your Lord. So, whoever sees, it is for his own good, and whoever is blind, it is to his own loss. And I am not a guardian over you,” and said: ﴿قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَهْلَكَنِيَ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ مَعِيَ أَوْ رَحِمَنَا فَمَنْ يُجِيرُ الْكَافِرِينَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ[4]; “Say: If Allah destroys me and my companions or has mercy upon us, who will protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?”

Secondly, it is highly improbable that Allamah Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani would not follow the truths he himself has revealed despite facing severe difficulties and great dangers; because it goes against the intellect and tradition for a person to risk his life, family, wealth, and reputation to reveal truths he doubts or neglects, to the extent that it can be said his revealing the truths that have exposed him to murder, imprisonment, insults, poverty, fear, exile, and other bad things is the best evidence that he is certain of and acts upon them. Therefore, even disbelievers and heretics acknowledge that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, was certain of and acted upon what he brought. They do not accuse him of doubting or neglecting it; because he revealed what exposed him to murder, imprisonment, insults, poverty, fear, exile, and other bad things. If he had doubted or neglected it, he would not have done that. Only one who conceals truths that are dangerous or difficult to reveal is accused of doubt and negligence. However, one who reveals them with patience, seeking Allah’s reward, is not accused of them, and whoever accuses him of them ﴿فَقَدِ احْتَمَلَ بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُبِينًا[5]; “has indeed burdened himself with a slander and a manifest sin.”

Thirdly, engaging in inviting toward good, enjoining right, and forbidding wrong is not merely a matter of words. Rather, it is a righteous deed for which Allah has promised Heaven, where He has said: ﴿وَلْتَكُنْ مِنْكُمْ أُمَّةٌ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَيَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ ۚ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ[6]; “And there shall be from among you a group inviting toward good, enjoining right, and forbidding wrong. And they are the successful.” If it were merely a matter of words, He would not have said: ﴿أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ; “They are the successful.” What attests to that is the story of the people of the Sabbath that He has narrated: ﴿إِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا ۙ اللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا ۖ قَالُوا مَعْذِرَةً إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ ۝ فَلَمَّا نَسُوا مَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهِ أَنْجَيْنَا الَّذِينَ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ السُّوءِ وَأَخَذْنَا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا بِعَذَابٍ بَئِيسٍ بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ[7]; “When a group of them said: ‘Why do you admonish a people whom Allah is the One Who Causes them to perish or punishes them with a severe punishment?!’ They said: ‘As an excuse before your Lord and that they may become pious.’ Then, when they forgot what they were reminded of, We saved those who forbade evil and seized those who did wrong with a terrible punishment because of their sinfulness.” Therefore, you should learn a lesson that the admonition of one group saved them from punishment, while the lack of admonition of another group led them to be among the sinners. This indicates that engaging in inviting toward good in a time of falsehood is not merely a matter of words in the sight of Allah that might be uttered by those who are doubtful or negligent. Rather, it is one of the deeds of those who are certain and pious, and Allah has explicitly stated this in His words: ﴿قُلْ هَذِهِ سَبِيلِي أَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِ ۚ عَلَى بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِي[8]; “Say: ‘This is my way: I invite toward Allah with insight, I and one who follows me’”; since He has made inviting toward Allah a characteristic of those who have insight and follow the truth. Yes, it is probable that a person who enjoins righteousness does not act upon it himself, such as those about whom Allah has said: ﴿أَتَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْبِرِّ وَتَنْسَوْنَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ تَتْلُونَ الْكِتَابَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ[9]; “Do you enjoin righteousness upon people and forget yourselves while you read the Book?! Do you not use the intellect?!” However, “righteousness” is a more specific term than “the truth,” and here, it refers to virtuous morals and actions that people praise, such as enjoining Muslims to perform prayer, pay zakat, fast, perform Hajj, maintain kinship ties, feed the needy, be good neighbors, speak truthfully, control anger, forgive others, be patient in the face of misfortune, and the like that there is no disagreement about their goodness and correctness. It is probable that a person who enjoins them does not act upon them himself, as enjoining them does not involve any danger or difficulty. Therefore, you find thousands of preachers in the mosques and gatherings of Muslims enjoining such virtuous morals and actions day and night, but you do not find most of them acting upon what they say; because they say what neither rulers dislike nor subjects deny, thus gaining wealth or a good reputation in the life of the world. They are not equal to one who invites toward truths that rulers dislike and most people deny, patiently enduring the harm that comes his way; because he undoubtedly is certain of and acts upon what he says. Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani is like this, as is evident from his writings and words.

Fourthly, presenting the truth without any falsehood mixed in is not something that everyone can do. Rather, only the sincere servants of Allah can do it; because it is “wisdom,” and Allah gives wisdom only to those who deserve it; as He gave it to the family of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, saying: ﴿أَمْ يَحْسُدُونَ النَّاسَ عَلَى مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ ۖ فَقَدْ آتَيْنَا آلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ[10]; “Or do they envy (this group of) people for what Allah has given them of His grace?! Because We have given the family of Ibrahim the Book and wisdom,” and He gave it to Dawud, peace be upon him, saying: ﴿وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ الْخِطَابِ[11]; “And We gave him wisdom and decisive speech,” and He gave it to Luqman, peace be upon him, saying: ﴿وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا لُقْمَانَ الْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ[12]; “And indeed, We gave wisdom to Luqman (saying,) ‘Be grateful to Allah,’” and He gave it to Isa, peace be upon him, saying: ﴿وَلَمَّا جَاءَ عِيسَى بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ قَالَ قَدْ جِئْتُكُمْ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَلِأُبَيِّنَ لَكُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذِي تَخْتَلِفُونَ فِيهِ[13]; “And when Isa came with clear signs, he said: ‘I have brought you wisdom, and that I make clear to you some of what you disagree about,’” and He gave it to Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, saying: ﴿كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا فِيكُمْ رَسُولًا مِنْكُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْكُمْ آيَاتِنَا وَيُزَكِّيكُمْ وَيُعَلِّمُكُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَيُعَلِّمُكُمْ مَا لَمْ تَكُونُوا تَعْلَمُونَ[14]; “As We sent among you a Messenger from among yourselves, reciting to you Our verses, purifying you, and teaching you the Book and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know,” and He gave it to whomever He willed from among His sincere servants, saying: ﴿يُؤْتِي الْحِكْمَةَ مَنْ يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَنْ يُؤْتَ الْحِكْمَةَ فَقَدْ أُوتِيَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا ۗ وَمَا يَذَّكَّرُ إِلَّا أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ[15]; “He gives wisdom to whomever He wills. And whoever is given wisdom has been given abundant good. And only people of understanding take heed.” Therefore, the wisdom Allah has given to Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani is clear evidence that he is close to Him and has dignity in His sight; especially considering that a person’s character is known by his thoughts, opinions, and goals, which are inevitably reflected in his words; as Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَلَتَعْرِفَنَّهُمْ فِي لَحْنِ الْقَوْلِ[16]; “And you will surely know them by the tone of (their) speech,” that is, by its style and meaning, and He has praised those who, ﴿إِذَا سَمِعُوا مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ تَرَى أَعْيُنَهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُوا مِنَ الْحَقِّ ۖ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ[17]; “when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears from what they recognize of the truth. They say: ‘O our Lord! we have believed, so write us down with the witnesses.’” Also, it has been narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib, peace be upon him, that he said: «تَكَلَّمُوا تُعْرَفُوا، فَإِنَّ الْمَرْءَ مَخْبُوءٌ تَحْتَ لِسَانِهِ»[18]; “Speak up so you may be known, for a man is hidden beneath his tongue,” and said: «كَلَامُ الرَّجُلِ مِيزَانُ عَقْلِهِ»[19]; “A man’s speech is the balance of his intellect,” and said: «يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلَى عَقْلِ الرَّجُلِ بِحُسْنِ مَقَالِهِ»[20]; “A man’s intellect can be deduced from the excellence of his speech,” and said: «مِنْ دَلَائِلِ الْعَقْلِ النُّطْقُ بِالصَّوَابِ»[21]; “One of the signs of the intellect is speaking the truth,” and said: «لِسَانُكَ تَرْجُمَانُ عَقْلِكَ»[22]; “Your tongue is the translator of your intellect,” and said: «قَوْلُكَ يَدُلُّ عَلَى عَقْلِكَ، وَعِبَارَتُكَ تُنْبِئُ عَنْ مَعْرِفَتِكَ»[23]; “Your words indicate your intellect, and your expressions inform of your knowledge,” and said: «يُنْبِئُ عَنْ عِلْمِ كُلِّ امْرِئٍ لِسَانُهُ، وَيَدُلُّ عَلَى فَضْلِهِ حُسْنُ بَيَانِهِ»[24]; “A man’s tongue informs of his knowledge, and the excellence of his expressions indicates his virtue.” Also, Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَهُدُوا إِلَى الطَّيِّبِ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ وَهُدُوا إِلَى صِرَاطِ الْحَمِيدِ[25]; “And they were guided to the good speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.”

Fifthly, many men have accompanied Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani. They attest to his justice and dignity and narrate from him his following what he invites toward in practice and with certainty. We have published some of their testimonies and narrations in the “Sayings” section of the website. There is no doubt that their testimonies are acceptable and their narrations are valid, considering the pieces of evidence we have presented, indicating that he is like that. Therefore, taken together, they lead to knowledge.

As a result, your uncertainty about Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani’s following the truths toward which he invites, on the one hand, does not prevent you from following them, and on the other hand, it can be remedied considering the points we have presented. Based on this, there is no need for you to say that Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani is the promised Mansoor Khorasani, of whom the Prophet and his Ahl al-Bayt have given glad tidings that he is the preparer of the ground for the advent of Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him. Rather, it is enough for you to cooperate with him in conveying these truths and putting them into practice even if you do not say that he is the one; because Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى[26]; “And help one another in goodness and piety,” and He has not restricted this to such a statement. Yes, it is not far-fetched that he is the one, and many of his helpers and admirers hope for that, considering his characteristics and his realistic preparation for the advent of Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him; rather, they say it with certainty. However, he does not claim that, nor does he engage in proving it. Rather, he forbids his companions from arguing about it; as one of his companions informed us, he said:

فَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى حَمْدِ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَلَمْ يُجَادِلْ فِي ذَلِكَ أَحَدًا!»[27]; “I came to Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani while there were some men with him, so I waited until the men left, then he turned toward me and said: ‘Do you want something with me?’ I said: ‘Yes, I have a question,’ and I began to tremble because of his grandness. So he said: ‘Ask, and make it easy for yourself!’ I said: ‘Are you Khorasani?’ He said: ‘I am a man from Khorasan!’ I said: ‘I did not mean that. I mean the man who prepares the ground for the Mahdi’s rule!’ He said: ‘I am preparing the ground for the Mahdi’s rule!’ I said: ‘I did not mean that. I mean the man who hands over the flag to the Mahdi!’ He said: ‘Insha’Allah, Insha’Allah. What prevents you from saying Insha’Allah?!’ Then two men came and interrupted him, so he met their needs. Then he turned toward me and said: ‘It has reached me that Ali, peace be upon him, was given a book from the books of the past, then he looked in it and found his name and description in it, so he cried and said: “Praise be to Allah with Whom I have not been forgotten. Praise be to Allah Who has affirmed me with Himself in the scripture of the righteous!” So he did nothing but praise Allah, nor did he argue with anyone about it!’”

This truthful scholar, who prepares the ground for the advent of Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him, with his knowledge without claiming anything, stands in stark contrast to the imposters who hinder his advent with their ignorance while claiming what baffles the minds! As he has described them in one of his sermons and said:

They inform about beyond the seventh heaven and beneath the fourth Earth, yet they lack true understanding of beliefs in Islam, nor do they have a grasp of its lawful and forbidden, and their best words are meaningless and incomprehensible, like the caws of crows! They have no roots in the soil of knowledge nor do they have a star in the firmament of piety! They mislead one with an unseen dream, and another with an unheard call! They cast one into the well with an unrevealed verse, and another with an untold narration! They deceive one with a futile saying, and another with an intricate spell! Thus, they leave no open door to the Mahdi unless they close it, nor do they leave any short path for his supporters unless they obstruct it, nor do they leave any untainted abode for his devotees unless they defile it! Every day, they change their colors, make new claims, and assert new discoveries about themselves; for their ambitions and exaggerations know no bounds. They blur the lines between truth and falsehood, and taint honesty with lies, until there remains no reverence for the truth and no value for honesty! When the banner of the truth is raised, who is he that recognizes it?! And when the honest word is spoken, who is he that accepts it?! The eyes have grown blind, the ears deaf, and the hands weary, and there is no longer patience for contemplation and examination; because the claimants have sown the seeds of ill suspicion far and wide, stirred up the clouds of pessimism across space and time, pushed life to the edge, and driven the blade to the bone.[28]

Therefore, it can be said that the emergence of the truthful preparer of the ground for the advent of Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him, without making any claim about himself, is a kindness from Allah, by which He lightens the burdens of believers, so that there is no hardship, doubt, or disagreement in helping him, and also weakens Satan’s plot; because Satan sends claimants before the truthful ones so that they vulgarize their names and words, bring accusations and negative thoughts upon them, and alienate people from them, ﴿اسْتِكْبَارًا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَمَكْرَ السَّيِّئِ ۚ وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ[29]; “(through their) arrogance on Earth and evil plotting. But evil plotting encompasses only its people.” Therefore, Allah sends the truthful ones without them making any claim about themselves and makes all the claimants liars. ﴿وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ[30]; “And the falsifiers will be in loss there!”

May Allah grant all the believers success in being certain of the truth and then following it with patience; because these two pave the way for the advent of Imam Mahdi, peace be upon him, among them; as Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا ۖ وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ[31]; “And We appointed from among them leaders who guide by Our command when they endured patiently and were certain of Our signs.” Praise be to Allah Who guided us to this, and His blessings be upon the cause of this, Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani, and those who helped him with their hearts, tongues, and hands, seeking the pleasure of Allah.
