Translation of the saying:

Abu Zakariyya Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Talaqani informed us, he said: I said to Mansoor during my first audience with him: “I ask you about some things. If you answer me, I will realize that you are one of those whom Allah has blessed, and if you do not answer me, I will realize that you are one of the pretenders (i.e., the claimants)!” He said: “Ask!” I said: “Inform me of the world, is it created?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “What was before its creation?” He said: “There was no ‘before’ before its creation.” I said: “Then did He create time?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “When did He create it?” He said: “There was no ‘when’ when He created it.” I said: “Then how did He create it?” He said: “He created it with the creation of movement.” I said: “So was movement the first thing He created?” He said: “No, but the first thing He created was the intellect so that He would be known and worshiped with it, then He said to it: ‘Come forward,’ so it came forward, then He said to it: ‘Go back,’ so it went back, so He set movement for it.” I said: “From where to where?” He said: “From potentiality to actuality. Then He created the self from it, so He made it as light and assigned levels to the light; it increases, so it becomes the soul according to its measure, and decreases, so it becomes the body according to its measure, then the heavens, Earth, and all that lies between them, including inanimate beings, plants, animate beings, and the Angels, are extracted from it, and each of them has its own light and measure.” I said: “I bear witness that you are one of those whom Allah has blessed, of the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and how excellent those companions are! By Allah, I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable than you.” He said: “You spoke the truth, but if you stay with me, I will show you a man who is more knowledgeable than me. He is called the Mahdi!”

Explanation of the saying:

This pure wisdom is a rare gem, filled with exquisite points and wonderful pieces of knowledge, and it contains special knowledge that can only be found with Allah’s friends from the family of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family. Therefore, it convinced the discerning questioner that Mansoor Hashemi Khorasani is not a lying, ignorant claimant, but rather he is a truthful scholar from those whom Allah has blessed, and he guides toward righteousness, reveals the truth of Islam, and prepares the ground for the Mahdi’s advent.

Although much can be said in explaining this pure wisdom, even a book can be written, there is no room for elaboration here. Therefore, we suffice with brevity and say: firstly, according to what His Eminence said, time is a part of the created world and has been created accordingly. Therefore, it has not existed before the creation of the world and has been created in conjunction with no-time. Therefore,  the question about what was before it or when it was created is meaningless; secondly, the first thing that has emanated from Allah is the intellect to serve as the foundation of His cognition and worship; thirdly, by a creational command from Allah, an inherent movement between potentiality and actuality has been placed in the nature of the intellect, and this inherent movement is what has brought time into existence; fourthly, the self has been created from the intellect, which is why it is perceptive; fifthly, the self has been made as light, whose nature is effective and ongoing, spreading throughout place over time, and therefore, the creation of the intellect has been an explosion of light, and this light continues to move and progress, and everything that exists is in its reality the self; sixthly, this intellect light, which is the self, has become endowed with strength and weakness by divine appointment, resulting in the creation of stronger and weaker self; seventhly, this intellect and self light is spirituality, and therefore, whatever strengthens becomes the soul until it ends in the pure soul, and whatever weakens becomes the body until it ends in the pure body, and the things that lie between them possess spirituality and physicality in proportion to their strength and weakness. Therefore, both the soul and the body are composed of the same light essence, to the extent that it can be said the soul is the strong body and the body is the weak soul, in the sense that this light essence is stronger in the soul and weaker in the body; eighthly, the heavens, Earth, and everything between them, including inanimate beings, plants, animate beings, and the Angels, have been created based on this integrated system and extracted from this intellect and self light, in a way that each of them has acquired a physical and spiritual nature according to their share of this light that possesses different levels, and of course, their nature is extracted from the extent of the light they possess, which is their existence; because the existence is one in essence but varies in level, and natures are levels of the existence. Based on this, each of them has acquired a nature in proportion to its existence; because each one of them has its own existence and measure; as Allah Almighty has said: ﴿وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِنْدَهُ بِمِقْدَارٍ[1]; “And everything has a measure with Him.”

Undoubtedly, such pure pieces of knowledge and unique words of wisdom are considered verbal miracles in the view of the discerning and are examples of clear proofs; because they speak of the truthfulness of its speaker and the connection of his heart with the High Place. Therefore, the discerning questioner says after hearing them: “I bear witness that you are one of those whom Allah has blessed, of the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and how excellent those companions are! By Allah, I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable than you!” However, it is astonishing that this human being, more knowledgeable than whom has not been seen, when he finds the questioner astonished at his great knowledge, immediately directs his attention to the Mahdi’s great knowledge, thus manifesting his true nature as a practical preparer of the ground for the Mahdi’s advent in everything he does and does not do, and unlike the claimants who, like empty and nosy drums, despite lacking any scholarly ability, invite people toward themselves and never stop from saying, “Me! Me!” he invites people toward the Caliph of Allah and never fails to say, “The Mahdi! The Mahdi!”

This is the difference between the truth and the falsehood that may be hidden from fools who ﴿لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ آذَانٌ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا[2]; “possess hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear!” However, it never remains hidden from the owners of the intellect, and they are the helpers of Mansoor, who know his value and rush to him even by crawling on snow in order to train under him to help the Mahdi and prepare the ground for his rule over the world. Undoubtedly, the good end belongs to them, not to claimants or fools who ﴿صُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ[3]; “are the deaf and the dumb and the blind, so they do not use the intellect!”
