Translation of the letter:

Hasan ibn Muhammad Sadiq al-Isfahani informed us, he said: A man from our family passed away, then I wrote to Mansoor and asked him about the prayer for the deceased, so he wrote to me:

The Sunnah is five Takbeer[1] in it, and there is nothing wrong if you add or subtract one, and there is no specific du‘a in it, so you stand before him while facing the Qiblah, then you say Takbeer and then say:

In the name of God and with God, and we belong to God and to Him we shall return; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is One and has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger, and He sent him with guidance and true religion to make it prevail over every religion, even if polytheists hate it.

Then you say Takbeer and then say:

Praise be to God, and peace be upon His servants whom He chose. Is God better or that which they associate (with Him)?! O God, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, and bestow your blessings on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You bestowed your blessings on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim; You are indeed the Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.

Then you say Takbeer and then say:

O Lord, we heard a caller calling to the faith that “Believe in your Lord,” so we believed. O Lord! So forgive our sins, remove our evil deeds, and make us die with the righteous. O Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not put in our hearts any grudge against those who believed! O Lord! You are indeed the Compassionate, the Most Merciful. O Lord! Forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are present and those of us who are absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. O God! Whomever of us You keep alive, let him live upon Islam, and whomever of us You take to Yourself, let him die upon faith.

Then you say Takbeer and then say:

O God! This is Your servant the son of Your servant; You took him away from the world, and he needs Your mercy, and You have no need for his punishment, so have mercy on him and do not punish him; because he was one of the believers, and You are Merciful to the believers as You said, so forgive his sins, remove his evil deeds, accept his good deeds, and have him enter Heaven, with Your mercy, O the Most Merciful of the merciful.

Then you say Takbeer and leave.
